State Nursing Jobs - Are they worth it?

I am looking into a couple of State jobs --
1. Lead RN in a residential neuro treatment center
2. As a nursing home inspector.

Does anyone have any information about jobs similar to these?
I have never worked for the state or even for a long term facility,
I have always done acute care nursing.

The reasons I am considering these positions is because I am 45 and I am beginning to worry about having enough retirement funds. State jobs are one of the few jobs anymore that still offers a pension plan (this one is the same as teacher's retirement) in addition to a 401k. Plus the other good benefits such as more time off and health care (compared to the local hospital).

I would like to hear from anyone who has information about working for the State - in my case in is North Carolina.
Thanks
