RESUME WRITING- what type of nurse am I???

I am a registered nurse with a BSN. I am currently looking for a new job that is mainly non-clinical and more of a quality/ utilization/ insurance/ leadership/ management/ educator/ informatics/ etc area.

Past jobs include:

- 6 years hospital based experience- mainly NICU- I know how to present this experience on my resume.

- 2 years of community based nursing experience- this is where I get a little confused on how to present myself as a nurse. The main reason I'm a little lost is because I don't know exactly what title I held! During these 2 years, I performed

nursing services for both a crisis pregnancy clinic and also a state DHS maternity group home, but I'm not sure what titles I should use on my resume. I was hired into these jobs through word of mouth, there was never a job posting to list the title, and I was just told what duties the employer needed. I did the jobs and that was that. All of my non-bedside nursing experience was gained in these positions.

Since I am looking for a managerial/leadership/case management/supervisor/director of nursing/utilization/quality/type of job, I want to showcase the skills I used in the community Nursing Jobs.

I have made a list of items I want to include on my new resume and would like to get your feedback on the types of jobs I could possibly apply for and the titles I could use to label my past experience. If you know how to state these items in more of an 'action' type phrase, I would like to hear your feedback on that too. I know resume writers encourage this but don't know how to do it myself.

ALSO- I am willing to hire someone to help, but I don't know of any specific resume writing agencies that are best for nurses, so if you have suggestions, fire away!

DHS Maternity Group Home-

-BSN consultant for the purpose of establishing and implementing all onsite healthcare related needs during modification of a DHS girls' group home to a maternity group home

-Responsible for development, sourcing, modification, and implementation of all healthcare related documents

-Developed all hea

lthcare related policy and procedure connected with resident intake, clinical related activities associated with daily care, emergent health situations, diet, physical activity, resident and staff education, and medication storage/handling/administration

-Formulated custom education programs, designed original teaching materials, and held education sessions for staff and residents on topics including: normal pregnancy, common complications of pregnancy, diet for expecting teens, exercise in pregnancy, lactation, psychological/physical support in pregnancy, postpartum care, newborn care, and postpartum depression

-Case management oversight of up to 6 mother/baby pairs demonstrates a strong knowledge of numerous pregnancy, lactation, postpartum, neonatal, and pediatric health processes

-Individualized POC included in-depth education of the residents demanding a strong ability to teach components of each health promotion process; Residents followed up with positive verbal/written understanding for each learning area

-Physically modified the maternity home to provide for clinical aspects of resident care- routine and emergency related medical supplies, locked/monitored medication storage areas, equipment for physician approved physical activity, and self/infant care learning stations for residents

-Provided nursing support via telephone during evenings, weekends, and holidays; 24/7 call

-High integrity case management ensured HIPPA compliance in all aspects of clinical care, maintenance and storage of confidential medical information, and sharing of protected personnel and patient records

-Development of multi-disciplinary care plans to foster and strengthen working relationships with private physicians, house nurse, house director, house mothers, WIC program, DHS social workers, pediatricians,

physical/occupational therapists, speech and language pathology, and other available community programs

CRISIS PREGNANCY CLINIC-

-Performed both lady partsl and abdominal limited OB ultrasound for women with positive pregnancy tests- (certified in limited OB Yultrasound)

-Effective communication of routine and emergent situations with MD overseeing the clinic

-Referrals provided for prenatal care and birth care to OB GYN physicians and facilities in the geographic area

-Evidence based practice used to develop a specific plan of care unique to individual patient needs

-Responsible for sourcing, development, revision, and implementation of educational materials related to obstetrics, gynecology, and STDs for both staff and clients

-Responsible for holding in-service staff education related to new or changing policy and/or practice

-Developed and implemented policy and procedure for ensuring equipment/supply availability, quality assurance/quality control, and appropriate use of medical devices

-Established and executed required clinic safety/emergency plans- including monthly review of fire safety equipment and emergency evacuation plans

That seems to be quite a lot of detail to include in a resume. Generally, it is preferable just to use summary descriptors - e.g., "managed care needs for clients of group maternity care home" and save the details for the interview.

You may also want to make sure that your resume is aligned with any 'official' position titles used by your former employers, because when the potential employer conducts a background check this will be included. If you are using one job title and your former employer is using another one, it may look like you're not being honest. In the case of a small operation without formal titles, you could use a brief descriptor instead - e.g., "Sole RN for multi-specialty clinic"
