pregnancy: will i still be hirable?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello, Im just looking for some advice and information really.

I am due to qualify as a children's nurse in Sept 2014, i am currently looking for jobs but not yet applying.

If i was to fall pregnant within the next couple of months (im aware this might not happen so easily) this would mean not getting a job untill mid 2015.

Would this put employers off? would i ruin my chances of getting a good job?

I cant see how it would, as i feel this way it better than to start a job then 6 months in going off on a year maternity.

Does any one have any opinions on this?

Thanks

I think the most important thing to consider is FMLA eligibility. You would need 12 months of work history at your job to claim FMLA benefits which means, should you go on maternity leave before that time, there is no guarantee that your job will be waiting for you...

I would put it off because if you become pregnant & don't qualify for FMLA, you might not have a job when you get back. I am finding this difficult as well. I'm pregnant with my first child & want to have another one in 2-3 years. I plan on applying to nursing school (bridge) & graduating in 2016 & by then I want to try for a second child. But I've had one complication after another that I know it wouldn't be a good idea to apply for a job then get pregnant. I had to quit the job I had d/t morning sickness & my epilepsy. It hasn't gotten any easier even though I'm in my second trimester. The next pregnancy could be better or worse. I know some employers might look down on me for having a license & not using it for awhile but I don't want to put off nursing school any more. That is the decision I have made, it's not an easy one.

Thanks ladies

Yeh I'm aware I wouldn't get FMLA because I would be 6 months when finishing Uni - I wouldn't get a job until after baby is born.

Money is no an issue at the moment however I'm sure it would be once we have a little one around meaning id like to go back to work (even if it's just part time) when baby about 3 months.

Would employers still consider me as it would be 6 months post graduation and first post?

I'm sure there will be employers who will question why you waited so long before seeking employment & look down on you for being an "old, new nurse". I'm not all that concerned because from my stand point since I've had so many issues/am sick a lot it would be better to not get a job that I have to quit because I'm pregnant. I know I want to go back to work soon but I want to go to school & get my RN first. Good luck with whatever you decide.

It sounds like you're not in the US.

This helped me out a lot ladies. I have 11 weeks to go until baby and I'll have about 6 months from the time I got my license when I apply to a job. It's killing me to not be able to work and put my skills to use. So in the meantime I still have to work as CNA in order to get by. But the nurses at work tell me to go and apply somewhere PRN but I don't know what to do.. advice?
