Path to Working in a Pediatric Cardiology Unit

This is my first ever post, and I am new to the website. Pardon me if I post this in the wrong section!

I am a senior working student wanting to work in a pediatric cardiology unit (particularly of CHOC/CHLA). I was told by an alumna that the unit was like a mix of ICU and med-surg. She advised me to work ASAP as a CNA, since I lack any hospital/healthcare-related experience (my parents and the nursing department advise to not work while in school). At the same time, this helps me form a network to get into a hospital. I'm planning to start around the beginning of March.

This may sound silly, but I'm wondering if it's possible to get a job despite having no work experience as a CNA. I'm a member of NSLS, STTI, ATD, and CNSA, but I'm not sure if that'll cut it for me to get hired.

I'm also wondering if I should work in a pediatric/adult med-surg/ICU unit before working in the pediatric cardiology unit.

In my neck of the woods, CNA experience is not very valuable in itself. The value lies in the connections you can establish while working as a CNA in a hospital of your choice. IMO, it wouldn't be worth it if you were just working in some random place, especially if it puts a strain on your ability to study and keep up your grades. Also - CNA implies certification.... do you have a plan to get certified? You may want to investigate 'patient care tech' jobs instead. These are positions that are designed for nursing students.

Your professional activism is evidence of your commitment to nursing, valuable information for your initial resume. Pediatric hospitals are usually better funded than their generalist counterparts, so they are more likely to be able to fund new graduate residency programs. Have you looked into this? If there is a program, get your application in there as soon as they will accept it!!
