Out of Nursing for a while, wanting to re-enter

Hey all,

I have been out of the nursing profession for about 5 years (since I had my first child). I now want to re enter, but do not now what to do. I would prefer to work at a doctor's office. I feel insecure. Can someone give any advice?

Check first with your state board of nursing to see what the requirements are for returning to nursing. You didn't say whether your license is still active or not but even if it is, you may need to take a refresher course of some sort. Or not!

You are still a nurse and of course you feel insecure...most would after having been out of work for awhile. Take a little time and complete some continuing education courses (there are a ton of free or inexpensive ones online) and update your knowledge base. If you want to go to work in a physician's office, you might consider taking courses on current immunization recommendations, new medications, chronic disease management, public health etc.

Then create a list of courses you have completed, update your resume and start interviewing. Many employers won't be bothered by the fact that you took some time out as long as you show initiate and self responsibility in getting yourself up to speed!

get your liscense up to speed, check with rn board and see what refresher courses are up to speed

there may be some courses at a local comm. coll.where you can learn more recent software used in that type of a setting
