The idea of working in a Critical Care Unit or ER terrifies me! This will probably make me sound really bad, but I'm not the touchy-feely type and don't have that overwhelming desire to "help people" that nurses usually possess. I am fascinated by the medical field though and love to visit hospitals, etc. How can someone find out if nursing is right for them?? I have a feeling it's just one of those things that you have to experience to know. I do think I have the potential to be a good nurse, I'm just scared of the nursing part! Does that make any sense?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
You certainly don't have to work in Critical CAre or the ER to be a nurse and you definitely don't need to be "touchy-feely". However, the part where you stated that you
"don't have an overwhelming desire to help people" is a definitely a problem, actually, a BIG problem. An overwhelming desire to help people should be
THE reason to go into nursing; it's a common denominator for all great nurses.
If you like the medical field you should look into being a lab technician.
good luck.
