is this the right career?

Nurses Career Support

Published

my problem is staying committed. i am only 23 years old but was interested in both law and business throughout college. after working in corporate world, realized that nursing maybe my calling. my heart is saying nursing is my calling but i'm just afraid of changing careers again. i just want to be happy with my final decision. experienced rn's please share w/ me how you overcame challenges and remained committed?

I'm feelin the same way.

I'm 23. I went to tech school for two years for electronics and I've been working for the gov for the past 3 years. I know that gov work is not for me and I'm really not into electronics. I used to want to be a doctor when I was a kid and Kids love me :-) (I like most kids too) so I am thinking about going for pediatrics and try to work with Childrens Hospital in Pittsburgh. I am just wondering where to start and what to expect. Can I work my way up to being a doctor by becoming a RN first? Will I spend less time in med school if I am already an RN? What would you (those with experience) reccomend?

Thanks.

Nursing school and medical school are two entirely different creatures.

If you REALLY want to be a doctor, I'd say go for it.... being a nurse first won't help you as far as your education is required (no shortcuts there, although the clinical experience might help you during M3/M4 year?)... med school is a LOT of work. That's my dream as well, to become a physician, but I've changed my major to pre-nursing since I have fears of applying, not getting in, and having no other skill to support my family in the period between application cycles (don't make much money with just a science degree ya know?)

I'd say try and spend a day job shadowing an RN and a pediatrician if you can... that way you can see what their lifestyle is really like and decide where you'd like to go from there.

Good luck!

Look into shadowing an NP too...might be best choice for you?

They do have peds NPs, etc.
