Is nursing really for me?

I decided to enroll in nursing school because 1)only two semesters, 2)pays good and lots of jobs out there 3)I think I have qualities that would make me a good nurse (organized, empathetic, hard worker)

But....

I am not assertive or a take-charge person. I don't know how I would do in emergency situations - I'm usally the kind of person that has to analyze things before taking action. I'm afraid that patients would see through my insecurity and demand for another nurse!

Also, I'm a stay at home mom with small children and planning on having more. So I need a career that I could work part time - and not bring work concerns home with me.

I've been looking into the Dietetic Tech programs - a job that focuses on one thing (nutrition), I still get to work with/help people, and it doesn't sound like a stressful job.

Anyone have any advice on why I should or shouldn't go through with nursing school? By the way, I'm just finishing my 1st semester, so I already have a lot invested in it.

Thanks!

I have a question for you....what would you do if one of your children was having difficulties, lets say breathing or had fallen and gotten injured, would you be able to act to help or save your child?

I would bet the answer is yes.

So it is with patients, when the time comes and you know that you are that patient's advocate, it becomes clear that you need to act. The need to help overrides what you see as your own lack of assertiveness. I would not let that stop you from being a nurse.

There are MANY niches or areas in nursing that you will be able to explore when you get your license. I promise that there are areas appropriate for every personality type. Also, nursing is a great way to develop areas in your own personality that may be less developed. Your personality is not set in stone...you can change.

My advice...keep going. You have already started. Do you think your issue is more insecurity versus lack of assertiveness? I have had to manage my own insecurity all through my nursing career and it can be done. Use Allnurses as you keep going through this process. Fellow nurses will be able to give you good advice.

See yourself as succeeding and you will succeed!:yeah::yeah::yeah:

I feel the same way and have a very similar situation!

But what I am thinking is that When my baby is older and in school I can decide to have more hours or get a higher nursing degree, I'm just hoping there is a specialty for me

Good luck!!!!
