importance of med/surg

I am about to begin my last semester of nursing school and I am currently contemplating what area that I want to work in. I am going back and forth between med/surg and emergency room. I am really interested in working in the E.d. as travel nurse, but everyone keeps telling me that I should work on a med/surg floor for at least one yr. b/f pursuing any speciality. I was just curious to know what other think about the suggestion. Also can anyone offer me any opinons and or suggestions about how I can prepare myself for travel nursing.

It all depends on the individual nurse. If you dont want to work med/surg, dont! Some do great starting out on specialty units, some dont. give the er a try! If it doesn't work out, you can go elsewhere.
