I need help

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello,

I need help. I am struggling with my nursing career. I finished school in December 2015. I took my NCLEX in March 2016 but I didn't start working right away. I finally was hired in October 2016 because a friend helped me get a job in Med/Surg.

I HATED IT... I AM 40 AND THE WORK WAS SO PHYSICAL. I ALSO STRUGGLE WITH LOW SELF-ESTEEM AND I WAS ALWAYS FEELING SO STUPID AS A NEW NURSE THAT I FELT LIKE I WOULD NEVER LEARN SO I TOLD MY DIRECTOR THAT I FELT VERY UNHAPPY AND I WISHED TO TRANSFER TO PSYCH. SHE WAS AN AWESOME PERSON AND I GOT THE TRANSFER.

I LIKED PSYCH MUCH BETTER BUT THE POSITION WAS NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS ONLY AND THAT MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR ME TO GET CHILD CARE. I ALSO HAD A BULLY NURSE ON MY BACK AND THE STAFF ALWAYS SEEMED TO BE AT EACH OTHER'S THROATS. THE UNIT WAS POORLY RAN AND MY DIRECTOR WAS FIRED. I FELT VERY STRESSED SO I PUT IN MY 2 WKS NOTICE AND QUIT.

THAT WAS IN JULY OF 2017. I HAVE STRUGGLED TO KEEP A JOB SINCE THEN. I TOOK A COUPLE HOME HEALTH JOBS AND I GET AS FAR AS ORIENTATION AND NEVER GO BACK. I TOOK AN O.R. POSITION AT AN OUTPATIENT CLINIC AND QUIT AFTER THE FIRST WEEK. I TOOK A TELEPHONE NURSING POSITION AND QUIT AFTER THE FIRST WEEK.

IT NOW SEEMS LIKE I CAN'T GET HIRED AND I'M SCARED TO APPLY FOR CERTAIN JOBS AND NOT LIKE THEM. I ONLY PUT MY FIRST TWO JOBS IN MY RESUME BUT IT STILL LOOKS LIKE I DON'T STAY AT JOBS LONG BECAUSE OF THE TRANSFER TO PSYCH.

MY DREAM JOB IS POSTPARTUM AND I NEVER GET CALL BACKS BECAUSE MY LACK OF EXPERIENCE.

I MUST ADD THAT I AM A HARD WORKER AND I ALWAYS GOT POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM PATIENTS AND STAFF. I JUST FEEL LOST AS A NURSE AND I'M AFRAID TO PUT MY BODY THROUGH HECK IN MED/SURG ETC AT AN OLDER AGE.

PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE. I HAVE NEED A JOB.

The fact that you keep quitting every job you get soon after hire is probably what keeps (and will continue) hurting you.

I didn't love any of my former jobs (or my current) either but unfortunately it's income so until I finish nursing school and get my license and get myself out there, it's what I have to do. You seem very high strung judging from your posting style, maybe invest in a few stress balls and some lavender oil.

I don't see much wrong with what you said a lot of people feel this way.

One tip to get your dream job is 1. Stay at the job you have and seek volunteer opportunities outside of the unit you are on. I know of a few pregnancy clinics that offer volunteer hours where i am. You can put volunteer work on your resume. Secondly consider getting a mentor to vent to. Unlike some of the other posts here you may have to pay some one to listen to you vent kinda like therapy but it's well worth it. I did coaching with nursealot.com and don't regret the money i spent. Good luck hang in there! A little kindness will go a long way.

I'm surprised you were able to make it through nursing school and not realize that med-surg is a lot of physical labor and that's nursing in general is hard and stressful, and also still typing all caps. And Just making it through nursing school stress for however many years. I'm surprised that many people hired you with little experience and your job hopping history unless you're leaving them off your resume. Usually when you "need " a job this is not how it presents. You do anything to keep any job when you need one for survival. There are also non- Nursing Jobs for money. This job history screams "not a hard worker" and you need a lot more than patients being happy with you to get a job. You need professionalism first and marketable skills. 40 is not an older age! And age has little to do with physical capability to begin with.
