How to turn down a job I've already accepted

Nurses Career Support

Published

I'm a new grad nurse and was literally just issued my license this afternoon. Before graduation, I was offered a position at the hospital I wanted to work at and in my preferred unit. I was almost giddy about it! I accepted the position and have been looking forward to starting their new grad program this summer. However, my circumstances have changed and I no longer think it will be the best fit for me and my family. It's a very recent development, so I'm not dragging this out, but I would appreciate some advice as to how I inform them that I am no longer able to take the position without burning bridges for the future. Hopefully someone has some insight on this topic!

Do not agonize over this, it happens all the time. Do let them know as soon as possible so they can start looking at other applicants.

Dear Ms. McCall:

I have been so excited about the wonderful opportunity to begin my nursing career in your department at Rampart General Hospital. The new grad program has a wonderful reputation and I'm honored to have been selected to be part of it. However, life circumstances have changed for my family and myself and I find myself in the regrettable position of having to withdraw from the program. Knowing that there are other candidates who would leap at this opportunity I felt that it was important to let you know as soon as possible.

I have learned so much in my time at Rampart, from the nurses such as yourself and your team, as well as physicians such as Dr. Brackett and Dr. Early. I am hopeful that the future may yet yield opportunities to join your team as an experienced nurse.

Kindest regards,
