Nurses Career Support

Published

My whole entire 6 year career I never stepped foot in a hospital, not because of turning down jobs but because they just won't hire me. The thing is,I don't have a hard time finding a job in ltc,hh, or as a school nurse. Yet I feel inadequate and incomplete. Doesn't wevery nurse want to work in a hospital sometime in their career? I want to get going in the trenches but feel so stuck. What can I possibly do to make hospitals notice me?

I now feel too old to bother with the hospital routine. I tell everyone I did enough running up and down the hallways pushing a cart and pulling my hair out when I worked in LTC. I can't imagine doing the same thing again in a hospital at this point. You are supposed to get that med surg hospital gig at the beginning of your career, not when you are literally right around the corner from retiring.

I've been an LPN for almost three years (yipes!) and had hopes of being the rare one who could find a hospital job - so that I could learn. I work in subacute/ltc, and have learned quite a bit, but it would be so nice to have the hospital experience. So, back to school for me. I wish that I had some advice on improving your chances, but I can only commiserate with you.
