Can't Land an ANM position!!!

Nurses Career Support

So I am very frustrated. I have been on the hunt in landing an assistant nurse manager position for quite some time now. I applied for an ADON position at a SNF facility, the Director interviewed me, seemed to like me, but I did not get the job. She mentioned that I would be awesome to start off there as a staff nurse. In addition, I went on a 3 hour interview at Florida Hospital in Orlando (I live in Tampa) to interview for an assistant nurse manager. Throughout the interview everyone was very impressed with my responses, took me on a tour after the interview, etc. I knew I blew my interview out of the water. Unfortunately, the HR recruiter called me today and said that the manager wants to bring me on as a staff nurse and train for relief charge and that she is willing to grow me into a leadership position. Because I don't currently work for Florida hospital, she has some reservations about bringing me on as an ANM. This makes me very upset because they knew I never worked for Florida hospital prior to my interview and knew i would be traveling 2 hours to go on the interview. I turned to the offer down because I do not want to get trapped in a staff nurse position again and whose to say they will have an ANM position available for me in the near future. What am I doing wrong? Is anyone going to take a chance on me although I do not have ANM experience? I am currently an RN so its not like I do not want to put in the work but I really do not want to start all over again as a staff nurse for WHAT IF's. Please Help.

Both examples you've given show that the facility wants to hire management from within. Sounds like you need to do your time in the trenches before applying for promotion to management.

And that is fine however, why interview me and waste both of our time if you know you want to hire from within?

Because many companies have internal policies dictating that they must interview a specific number of candidates before offering the position to the internal candidate.

Well I wish they would have stuck with local candidates. It's as if they knew they were going to try and bait me into becoming a staff nurse.
