Hiya

I am a US born/raised/trained RN who graduated with a Associate Degree in Nursing in Massachusetts..You do have to keep up your US licensure as well as register with the Nursing,Midwifery Council and keep that licensure up as well.

I've been living and working in Scotland for just over 5 years now.

I was first here on a work permit which the first hospital I worked at sponsered.

After being here for four years of continous work permit employment you can apply for Indefinate Leave to remain. That allows you to move jobs when you want to and doesn't tie you down to a hospital/job that is willing to sponser a work permit .

I certainly do not see why not. Unless things have changed in the 5 years since i came over..

What NMC(Nursing,Midwifery Council) are most interested in is that you have your RN.. (took the NCLEX and passed and have some experience)

Always best to check with NMC as they are the licensing body for Nursing here in the UK. http://www.nmc-uk.org

The difficult part for me was knowing where to start. I got my first position over here via a placement agency that helped the hospital with the work permit stuff. However it is no longer in existance.

Do be aware that the pay is MUCH lower here than in the USA.

Do I HAVE to register with NMC? What if I know the location I want to work at and they have overseas applications? And also, I realize the pay is low, but is it enough to live on?

Yep every nurse working in the UK has to be registered/licensed by the NMC.

It is the employer that sponsers the work permit. So as a foreign nurse you can not just apply for a generic type of work permit. It is tied to whatever Hospital you end up working for. You could approach the hospital and ask if they are willing to sponser a work permit however as i said it would be tied to that particular hospital and if you wanted to change hospitals.. the new hospital would have to apply for a new work permit..

After four continous years on a work permit with however many employers you can apply for what is called Indefinate Leave to Remain which means you would no longer need a work permit and can go and work at what ever hospital you want.

Hope that all makes sense. It is VERY confusing at first :)
