Nurses Career Support

Published

so, i am set to take anatomy and physiology 1 in the fall. I am already in the health field, i am a yoga and fitness instructor. i have a ba in psychology and am extremely interested in health and the body. i am looking to expand my health and wellness knowledge and at 31 am looking to pursue a career with many possibilities. so, i decided on nursing. there is something about being in a hospital that i love, i enjoy working with people, and i like the hands-on aspects of nursing. i especially enjoy and crave helping others be "well". so am i kidding myself with nursing/ am i gonna be just another pill pusher for the drug company of the day, with gobs of unthankful patients and egotistical doctors? i know there are many different fields to enter in nursing, i guess i'm just confused, scared, all that stuff. the a & p will come in handy for me no matter what i decide, everyone just says to me that nursing is a calling, and i should enter it with much thought and trepidation...but life is short right, why not do nursing?

Commit2day--you seem ahead of the game with already the BA/psychology..

nursing is a wonderful job,,however, lots of physical..if you want to expand and like in hospital...have you thought of nutrition/rehab-physical--also uses psycology..many areas besides just RN-NEVER would discourage and....love the field..MY suggestion is you go to a hospital or 2,,ask to follow someone a few hours a day,,I>E> physical therapy, nutrition..ect..see the different options to use all sports, psychology and desire of your interests...good luck

I too have a BA in Psychology and an interest in health and fitness, yoga, all that stuff. I went to nursing school after a few years in the corporate world, when I was 29 years old. I am only about 6 months into my RN position, and it has been a challenge to say the least. I have questioned my decision to become a nurse many times, I have left work in tears, and I go into work with a buzz of anxiety every day. Despite the challenges and the gripes I have made so far (and that you have probably read on this site)...there is an underlying sense of pride that I have in myself and in this profession of nursing. Nursing challenges me on all levels: emotionally, physically, spiritually and intellectually....which can't be said for many professions. For the most part, the docs love to teach (especially the residents), and you can learn alot from them. Most of the patients are greatful for the care, and if they get nasty, they usually end up apologizing at some point. I don't feel too much like a pill pusher, because the patients need the drugs I am giving them...I work on a cardiac unit. The pills that keep their heart rate and BP low are keeping improving their quality of life. Sounds like your interest in the hospital setting and the hands on stuff would be a great fit in nursing. I say GO FOR IT!!! In nursing, there are soooo many opportunities. After you get some experience under your belt, the world is yours. And don't stress out about nursing school, like I did. I was in agony during school, stressing about clinical and lacking confidence, I really put alot of unneccesary stress on myself. If you decide to go back to school, just enjoy the ride, ask lots of questions, and don't be afraid to use your common sense. GOOD LUCK!!!

thank you sooooooo much for that inspirational reply!! i needed it. i AM starting a & P in the fall and am somewhat apprehensive, but for the most part very excited and willing to trek into this new area of education and wisdom. it's good to know there are people like myself in the field that put real thought and emotion into their patient care. i believe we can heal with a pill and a loving gesture. thanks again for your reply and i wish you all the best
