African American in San Antonio

Hello all, I am seeking a career advancement opportunity in San Antonio, TX which will mean I have to relocate from Phoenix to San Antonio. I truly believe this position will be good for my career, however I am a bit concerned about my family being about to adapt. I have done my research and see that the population of African Americans in San Antonio is about 7%. Can anyone give me some advice. Thanks 😳

I'm from central TX, and I don't think you'll have any problem there. San Antonio doesn't have a huge AA population, true, but 7% is still quite a few (given the overall size of the city), and there are a lot of military people in the area, a fair % who are going to be AA as well. And hey, although it'll be hot - and relatively humid, but not like the Southeast - it won't be nearly as hot as Phoenix.

Although the San Antonio population is majority Hispanic, it is pretty diverse for its size - probably due to the military influence, as OP stated. Be sure you engage the services of an experienced Realtor when looking for a place to live, as you'll want detailed information on the neighborhood schools as well as overall demographics. Speaking from experience, (grew up in SA) it can be really uncomfortable to be the only non-Spanish speaker, especially for kids who are trying to get used to a brand new school/location.

Climate-wise, you will probably find it much more humid than Phoenix, but the heat shouldn't be a problem. SA is in the 'dry half' of the state. We swamp dwellers (Houstonians) certainly wouldn't consider it very humid either.

Thank you for your reply. My kids are all grown and in college. How about church services? The dating scene for a single black woman? Thanks in advance.

Hi I currently live in Cibolo, Tx just north of San Antonio. We have a lot of military with a larger population of AA. I'm surprised at the low percentage I guess directly in San Antonio. So especially with the military it is a large melting pot and accepting area. Depending on where you're working my area may be a little far out for you. I think you will like San Antonio it is pretty big and I'm sure you'll find an area and be happy.

Thank you for your reply. That makes me feel better about this possible relocation.

Thank you for your reply. I am learning that sometimes to advance your career you have to be willing to take the risk of relocating to a new State/City. Thanks again í ½í¸‰

I lived in San Antonio for a few years and loved it. There are probably more AAs than reported because of the military population. I worked for the state government and found it very diverse. Most were military connected, but not every one. The weather is probably better than Arizona. The church going population is huge. Best wishes for your relocation.
