Malpractice Insurance

Nurses Professionalism

Published

Hi! I am a new RN.

I have been seeing this around lately and curious about them. I have a friend who recommended that I get one as I apply for jobs.

What are they? Do you have them? If so, what company or policy do you recommend?

Specializes in pediatrics; PICU; NICU.

It's definitely in your best interest to have your own professional . Make sure you get a policy that includes "license defense" coverage. NSO is a good company. Most insurance is around $100/year unless you work labor & delivery in which case it's more expensive.

The two companies that get mentioned most often in discussions about professional are NSO and Marsh. They specialize in professional liability insurance for nursing and other health occupations. I've had coverage with both at different times over the years (decades), but, fortunately (knock on wood!), have never had to use the coverage, so I don't have any idea if one is "better" than the other. Some members here have posted at various times about having isurance as a rider on their homeowner's insurance, but I have no idea how that would work -- I am more comfortable dealing with a company that specializes in covering healthcare professionals. There are a bunch of older threads here discussing the pros and supposed "cons" of carrying your own insurance, if you want to review people's opinions and experiences about this. I would never work a single day without my own coverage.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Totally agree with above poster. Also, Yamkins I know you are in IL where we have one of the highest malpractice ratios of suits to pts in the nation! All you have to do is have your name on a chart where someone is sued and you WILL be named. The money is well worth it.

Oh, wow! Good to know. Thanks, everyone!

I'm currently looking at NSO's trying to get a quote. :)
