I'd like an RN's Input on Professionalism, please

Nurses Professionalism

Published

Hello, my name is Tim. I am in the final block of my nursing program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

I have recently been given an assignment to consult nurse managers, preceptors, and/or working professional nurses, to invite their input, in regards to what is the best way to answer the following question in an interview:

Describe yourself as a professional, and describe your future expectations.

I would greatly appreciate any RN's input!

Thank you so much,

-Tim

I suspect that the point of this exercise was to get you out there talking to actual nurses. In person. It takes you out of your comfort zone, and I presume that is the point. Make an appointment for a face to face meeting with nurse managers, NPs, preceptors and bedside nurses. Or, if you're on a nursing unit with your clinicals simply ask to pick their brains during a moment of downtime. Share your goals (you do have some, don't you?) and ask for ways to re-word or refine the statement.

The hardest part is picking up the phone. Good luck getting started.

Thank you Ruby Vee for the prompt response, motivation, and advice! Yes, this assignment is to help me make connections with hospital management and registered nurses.

I thought I would give allnurses a shot because I have addressed this to local hospitals in my area, but I have not received a response from an RN yet. Also, my clinical rotation does not begin until March, and the assignment is due on March 1st.

I will be more aggressive to get that in person interview!

Thanks again,

-Tim

Why wait for responses? Go down to the hospital's cafeteria and offer to buy a nurse a Coke, cookie, etc if they would be willing to talk to you for a few minutes. I wouldn't talk to them for their entire lunch break, unless they are very talkative.

That is awesome advice, Guy in Babyland! I'm definitely going to do that!

Thank you, sir

I recommend against that!! Last thing I would want is to be annoyed by anyone on my lunch break. See if there is a careers day or networking event. I think the assignment is a little silly if you're not on prac.

i would answer your assignment question but it seems a little vague. What are my future expectations?.... Of what? I mean technological implications... Or aging or obesity? I'm not sure
