Racism at Oakland University?

Nurses Activism

Published

In Dean Catherine Vincent's pediatric pathophysiology course, all of her white middle-class students did exceptionally well but a Mexican-American student in her class failed miserably. What was the reason for the minority student's failure? Could it be mere coincidence? It would not be the first time in history that a teacher handed out grades according to his/her racist beliefs. "Studies have reported faculty bias toward minority students in grading papers, judging clinical performance, and assessing written examinations" (Villarruel, Canales, & Torres, 2001). "Nurse educators need to acknowledge that, with a few exceptions, racism is endemic in our programs" (Barbee & Gibson, 2001).

What can be done when the faculty at Oakland University sides with Dean Vincent? Isn't it convenient that her exams are graded by hand affording her the opportunity to grade exams in any manner she pleases including racist ones?

Whites make up 86% of the registered nurse population. Despite the dramatic increase of Hispanics in the U.S., there has been no significant increase in the number of Hispanic nurses. I wonder what's keeping Hispanics out of nursing?

In light of the comments made which do not address the original thread but instead only are made to instigate more bad feelings (yes kbaldwin...yours), I am unsubscribing to this thread.

I'll see you all next door.

Mr. Peeps. Why must you make insinuations? If you believe I am a racist, come out and say it. I will tell you I am not a racist. I don't hate whites. I do have a problem with people that act racist.

Mr. Peeps. I've been sharing these messages with my wife. She wants you to know she is not Mexican. Here is her home page with picture:

It would be difficult being a racist when you hate the color of your own spouse.

Rstewart: I appreciate your concern with posting my exams. But how else could I present my case without providing you all the facts?

How fair was it when students in my class had copies of last year's exams and didn't share them with me? I could have benefited from seeing those exams too!

apparently, there's a #6 topic currently being discussed on allnurses.com forum...

6. crna vs. mda's

https://allnurses.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17140&perpage=20&display=&pagenumber=1

apparently, medical students today still seem to think that nurses, of all educational levels, are :angryfire inferior to the intellect of mds or dos. apparently, these students are being taught this by their instructors....check out one of their forum topic: crna making 120000 to 180000 at student doctor.net http://forums.studentdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=001987;p=

you'll soon see that forum turn from one of how much a crna earns to one of crnas vs. mdas & how we nurses are practicing medicine without the "proper" education & skills as they get in medical school.

but geezzz, if you look at it, doesn't this arguement sound familiar to that of #2 & #3....just depend on which side of the tracks one's on i guess .

:chair: sorry for getting the topic off track...just thought i'll add to sharon's list of vs. sorry if i piss anyone off

thanks for the link, i bookmarked it. it was very interesting, who knew doctors could be so catty?:(

Manuel, do you not have very many freinds in your class?

Most "nurses" (including students in that) are helpful and supportive by nature.... I find it hard to believe that you would be left out of sharing exam study material intentionally.

I was VERY shy when I started university... and I too did poorly on exams because I was not party to sharing teh info and studying that went on in the "groups of friends" that had formed. But once I started asking to be included.... voila. Felt better, felt more included, got better grades, etc. It was not an issue of race, but an issue of being part of the group... My classmates had assumed that I had my own bunch of friends and that I did not want to be part or their study groups. Once they knew differently, I was included with open arms.... Just a few comments....

This thread has had a long run and some excellent advice was given. I am closing it has it has strayed from the original topic and name calling is occuring. It has outlived it's usefulness.

To the original poster: your perception is that you were uncomfortable in this class due to your race and that it affected your grades-- that is your interpretation. By publicly naming instructor and university, you presented one side of the story.

After looking at the information posted at your website, it is obvious that some exam questions were only partially answered and some missing entirely the requested information---that is part of the other sides story.

In future posts, please refrain from posting a person's full name and location. Please review your college handbook regarding publicly posting college material. Many posters have given you great advice...I hope everyone viewing these posts will reflect on it and the ethics involved.
