I'm glad that the patient didn't attempt to blame his nurse for his behavior. He accepted responsiblity, what a concept!

Gee, and all without a videotape!

This really contrast with that story someone posted a while back. It was about a nurse that was beaten by a mental patient and brought charges against him. The judge beat her again when he told her that nurses should accept that sort of thing. That really disturbed me and I can't think why his house was not picked by nurses in the area.

I am a mental health nurse. Unfortunately, patient violence is all to common. When a person is off their medication, they do all kinds of things that they wouldn't do if they were taking it. You always have to be super alert, and prepared for that sort of thing. These days we can chemically restrain patients rather than the old practice of restraining them to their beds. Also, seclusion rooms work. Sometimes however, a patient can seem ok one minute and just sort of snap the next. I feel for the nurse who got hurt, but admire her strength and belief in her patients to know that it was his illness that caused him to hurt her, and not him doing it out of meaness. I wish more nurses were like her. She truely cares about her patients, and did what we as nurses are suppossed to do, speak up on behalf of our patients.
