'The job that we do is who we are'

This year's theme for Week of the Nurse emphasizes a true commitment to caring

There is no shortage - of caring in Virginia nurses. And Week of the Nurse, today through the 12th, recognizes that. This year's theme: "Nurses Are the True Spirit of Caring."

2001 marks 'A Century to Celebrate'

A three-year centennial celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Virginia Nurses Association culminated this year with a look toward the future of nursing, a rededication ceremony at a banquet, and the posthumous induction of 10 special nurses to the Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame.

Nursing trends follow demographics, technology

What new trends do you see in the nursing industry? Florence Jones-Clarke, Virginia Nurses Association president and clinical program manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington states:

Hall of Fame established with 10 nurse-honorees

Ten women, whose lifelong careers contributed to advancement of nursing in Virginia, won posthumous honors from their peers May 2. They were selected as the first women to be named to the Virginia Nursing Hall of Fame.

At-home care bridges gaps for patients

At the turn of the 20th century, many people in Richmond did not have access to the healthcare they needed. As is often the case today, patients were discharged from hospitals early, leaving families with the responsibility of caring for loved ones at home.

Metro nurses group aids health efforts

A desire for better communication among registered nurses caused seven black nurses to found the Metropolitan Nurses Association in 1977. Artrelle Spicely, RN, is the current president of the Richmond-based group, which was incorporated in 1982 and is open to new members. The organization's motto is "Nursing is Caring, Metropolitan Nurses Association Cares!"

Nursing careers follow different paths

Whether one serves during war, teaches or works through a crisis, care is central. Louise Wells knows what it's like to administer medical care to patients housed in tents in North Africa and Quonset huts in Korea. A member of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, Wells cared for wounded soldiers and understood the commitment involved in military nursing - 15-or-more hour days, seven days a week.

Offering another approach to healthcare

Nurse practitioners can help physicians and give patients the tools for wellness

At many medical practices around town, patients quite often will see a nurse practitioner rather than a doctor. Nurse practitioners are nurses who have received extensive advanced training and certification, often including a master's degree, in specific areas of medical care. These specialized nurses are found in many different areas, ranging from pediatric practice to women's health.

Sorority 'serves humanity'

Worshiping together at an area church will be one way of celebrating National Nurses Week by members of the local Zeta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc., an international nonprofit professional nursing organization.

Area institutions offer nursing degree programs

For students interested in a career in the nursing field, there are nine area schools that offer nursing-degree programs. Here is a list of area nursing schools, their programs and requirements:

Virginia LPN group to meet here this week

Roslyn Dance, a registered nurse and the Mayor of Petersburg, will speak at the opening of the Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse's Association's 30th annual convention May 9. "LPN'S Creating Excellence" will be the theme for the convention held May 8-11 at the Richmond Hotel and Conference Center on Broad Street. Students at 52 schools for LPNs across the state have been invited to the opening session May 9.

Going back to the 'Nightingale roots'

Speaker explains her theory of human caring, 'caring science'

Bringing nursing back to its roots through a new type of science called "caring science" was part of the message shared Dr. M. Jean Watson at her recent visit to the VCU School of Nursing. Dr. Watson (PhD, RN, Fellow of the American Academy of Medicine and Holistic Nurse Certified) spent three days at the school as a consultant to the Healing Research Group. She was also keynote speaker at the Second Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Spirituality on April 24 at the Marriott Hotel.
