Hard of hearing Pre-nursing student

  1. Good afternoon everyone...

I am a pre nursing student hard of hearing with two in the ear hearing aids. Are there any other hard of hearing nurses... what have your challenges been? I could use a mentor. I am also wondering if I should apply to Lpn school or just Rn school. I am now a Cna 1 and will be taking medication technician in the fall and have no intention of taking Cna 2 now or do you think that would be a good?

I just became a Cna about three weeks ago and I now work as one with a agency and in the mean time I have been applying to nursing homes.

    Thanks in advance

Hey, I am also hard of hearing and wear BTE bilateral hearing aids. I just graduated with my BSN, and passed my NCLEX 2 days ago. Having hearing aids isn't a big deal as long as you are functional. I never had a problem, in fact almost everyone I came across were supportive of me. I think the biggest thing is having confidence in yourself. I use Littman Cardiology III and hear just fine with them. I use them over my hearing aids. Just go straight for your BSN if you can and dont worry about having hearing aids. People wear glasses.

Hey - another RN with bilateral hearing aids here. I'm going to be honest with you, I've been bullied pretty badly at my current job because of this, but I'm holding out the hope that these people are innately miserable and this has no real reflection on the nursing community as a whole. My mom is profoundly hard of hearing and is one of the most amazing nurses I know. I say go straight for RN. If your hearing issue is whats concerning you and holding you back, don't let it. There have been so many advancements, it's crazy. I use an amplified stethoscope with special ear pieces I got from my audiologist. I've been told by people without a hearing problem that its infinitely better than the Littman cardiology, but that's just their opinion. I love it though, it's the best tool. You might run into people who doubt you, but you'll always have someone who has your back. My coworkers are aware of my disability and there are a select few who would help me at the drop of a hat, no questions asked. You'll learn your own techniques and how to excel in the field, don't let it hold you back!

Hi Emily, I have been searching high and low for ear pieces that will work with hearing aids. If it's not too much of an inconvenience, could you let me know the brand of yours and where I might find them? My audiologist doesn't have any idea where to find ear pieces to put on a standard stethoscope. Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

I've reached to my audiologist, and unfortunately its something that really needs to go through your audiologist because of distribution, and the customization. They really should be doing more research, because they're the one who should be able to get them for you. I've gone through the department of vocational services for reimbursement as well. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Just knowing the exist is a huge help! I'll call around to some other audiologists in my area and see what I can find. Thank you for bringing these to my attention!

see my previous post, the ones in my pic are easy to make, I did post instructions in another post in this sub-forum. If you are stuck I can probably make you a set and send them to you... just cover materials and shipping.
