Okay, we all know how easy it is start an IV, give an injection or perform some other type of procedure on a patient. However, what happens when WE are the patient? Are we the brave patient who grins and bears it. Or are we the pt that screams when you even discuss what is about to take place? What do you do?

When I went for pre-op labs for my 2nd knee replacement, the lab tech tried twice & couldn't get a vein. She called for reinforcements who also could not get it. They ended up calling anesthesia to find a vein for them!

Specializes in Med nurse in med-surg., float, HH, and PDN.

Do you sometimes find it is better if the person going for your vein doesn't know you are a nurse?

Also, if someone is really good, I am sure to complement them and thank them!

Once, as I was standing in line for labs to be drawn, I watched a guy draw blood from two brothers, just little guys, maybe 5 and 7, and when neither of them even sniffled or flinched, I knew that phlebotomist was GOOD!

Nurse to patient (me): BACK!!! GET BACK, I SAY!!! You nurses ain't laying one finger on me!!!:cautious:

Part two should have read 'me (patient) to nurse'. But you get the gist...

I've been told several times that I give pain-free injections...and I've had looooots of practice. And recently with doing blood draws at the clinic I've been volunteering at, I've been told they barely feel it when I stick them. I must have a way with needles. :)
