Virginia Monitoring Program

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hi.

I was wanting to start a thread for only people in the Virginia Monitoring Program. I am not finding too many threads about it or people in it. I have started into it and will be doing orientation soon. I will try and post what I can but of course no one can answer your legal questions, only legal counsel can do that. This would be more for personal experiences and what not.

If anyone is in it and would like to participate in this thread, please do.

So, for me, I am in it for mental illness (will not disclose what I have) and ETOH abuse. My story began when I sent my application in for licensure (to the board). I was honest and disclosed because I don't know what the future holds and I thought it would be in my best interest to disclose. Plus, I don't feel comfortable lying. I personally do not have a history of drug use or drug diversion (my apologies if you have heard my story in other threads). I was sent a letter from the board requesting my provider send a letter regarding my dx, tx, and prognosis. In addition, I sent a letter on my own behalf with my provider's letter. My case went before the board and I was offered approval to take NCLEX if I agreed to enter into the monitoring program. If I did not agree, there would be an informal conference scheduled. If I had decided not to do the monitoring program and went with the informal conference, I was informed that there could be approval, there could be denial, there could be probation, or the offer could stand at entering into the monitoring program. There's just so many things that could happen. I thought about it and really wrestled with my decision. I have to be honest, in the beginning, I hated the idea of entering into the monitoring program. I really was thinking of taking the informal conference. Then, I realized that I could be denied. No possibility of taking NCLEX and ultimately, no chance at being a nurse. I continued to think about it and decided to take the monitoring program deal. I figured that it was in my best interest (I was in the very early stage of having a mental illness dx, so I hadn't been treated for long and this would force me to stick with getting treatment whether I liked it or not) and I would also get to sit for boards. It took weeks to receive the order in which I would have to sign (and get notarized) and send back to the board in agreement to enter the monitoring program. I went through the process and contacted the monitoring program and told them I would need to enter it and that I had a board order. A phone intake assessment interview was scheduled and then, they sent me paperwork to fill out. The monitoring program sent me recommendations that I have to follow and I will have an orientation for the program. After the orientation, I will have to do random drug screens.

Some random facts about the monitoring program. You can't work in health care until they approve you to go back. The drug screens are $50 each and they can test you as often as three times a week. From what I understand, if you are compliant, the screens (therefore, the cost) eases up. I just about had a bird when I found out the cost. But a few people told me that if I was in compliance, that it usually eases up. I am really hoping this is true. You, the participant, are responsible for the cost of the screenings. The orientations for the program are held in Richmond. Your health care providers and possible health care employers have to fill out forms every so often.

As of right now, this is about all I know. I did keep a time table of when I received documents from the board and monitoring program and when I would send documents to them. From the time I filled out my application to the time I received my board order and entrance into the monitoring program/contract, it was approximately 6 months. I will be taking boards soon.

If anyone else is interested in sharing and is in Virginia, please do. I know I have come across threads asking about this monitoring program and there wasn't much info and no one updated. I hope to keep this updated if others are interested. I hope I didn't violate TOS. Thanks.

Hey all! Thought I would update since it's been a while! I've got 19 months sobriety and have been back to work for 5 months in dialysis. It's been good for the most part, aside from really missing working in the nursery. There are a lot of problems in my dialysis clinic. We've lost 4 employees in the last 2 weeks and it's a very large clinic- 36 chairs, so it can be very overwhelming with being so short staffed. I really wanted to give this new area a full 150% chance, especially since being so grateful to return back to work. But I know I also need to do what is best for my mental health and sobriety. I'm not one to quit- I stayed at my last job for 7 years! So it will be a difficult decision if I do decide to move on, but my question is what is your experience with changing jobs while in hpmp? Is the no nights restriction for the full 5 years?

Some of my message was cut off, I also wanted to ask if anyone knows of nurses being approved and finding work in the nursery, or if I should just forget that dream for a few more years. Thanks so much in advance! I hope this message finds everyone doing well!

Hello everyone. I have not posted on this site before. A little background information...

I am an RN enrolled in HPMP for diversion. I have been in the program for a little over a year now. I have been clean/sober since December 05, 2014. I voluntarily enrolled in the program but was already under investigation, so my case info is on the Board website for all perspective employers to find. While I know it is best for public safety, I have had three job offers contingent upon the background check. I am still not employeed as a RN. Although I disclose my participation in HPMP and why during the interview process, the background check seems to halt all potential job opportunities. I just wanted to reach out and ask if anyone else has had this problem, any advice, or if anyone has any recommendations for employment in the Hampton Roads area. It is an embarrassing process to say the least and I am becoming discouraged. Thank you for your input.

Skinny,

Dialysis is always hpmp friendly. Forget sentara, they don't hire those in monitiring from my understanding. I know of one person whose in hpmp that works for Chesapeake regional. PM me with any questions.

Hello all. Any fellow HPMPrs out there who may have some leads on an HPMP understanding manger or hospital unit in the tidewater area (other than sentara please)? The dialysis unit i was lucky enough to secure a job in 6 mos into HPMP is killing me. Incompetent doesn't even begin to describe what I'm seeing on a daily basis. Leadership is even worse. I have been approved to return to critical care but would be happy to work anywhere in an in-patient setting again. Just thought Id throw this out there and see if a little recovery networking might pay off.

Hope you're all well.

I just came across this thread. Not sure if people are still following it but I have a few questions. I have Georgia Nursing License with a private consent order for postpartum depression and Ambien abuse. I did not divert from work nor did I lose my job so my consent only requires me to attend aftercare for two years and report for quarterly drug screens and quarterly reports. I will be moving to the D.C. area in a year so I am starting to plan what I need to do. I will still have a little over three years for my consent order. If I apply for a Virginia license will I have to enroll in their monitoring program which seems more strict then my current consent order? Or will they just follow my current consent order? I'm not sure what to do... I currently work for the government system so I can hold a license in any state but I'm not sure if I will continue working for the government when I move. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

They will probably make you start over from scratch with their monitoring program.

Really?! No way! Okay well moving on to the next plan then....

Yes, hate to say it but that might be best--see what Maryland has to offer, it almost certainly can't be worse. I had 6 successful months with Florida's program before transferring to Virginia, but got no credit for it, and found the VA program in general to be very cold, very discouraging, and completely lacking in compassion--it was all about following the rules, which were extremely nit-picky, and no excuses were ever accepted for anything. They were awful.

So, I have been in HPMP for 4 yrs, so I feel like I should know the answer to this....but did we have to check in on Thanksgiving? If I remember right, we did not have to with Affinity; however, we use Recovery Trek now. I did not check in and that is why I am nervous.

We shouldn't have had to, I did anyway and it just said no/not selected. But in the handbook online it still says we don't have to check in on thanksgiving. So you should be fine!

I tried to look in the handbook and couldn't find it. What is it under/page number?
