Working HCA while doing ONP with supervised practice

Im starting my onp with citi univ of london next week. Im currently working as HCA in an NHS hospital and they were the one funded my course. One sister in my ward told me that I should do my supervised practice in a different day (extra days) not while working as HCA. She said I should do it in my extra hours or annual leave. Is this right? I discussed this to my matron and told me that she will give me once a week supervised practice alone with my mentor and may do some hca jobs and supervised practice if im with my mentor on the other days. The NMC gave me a 3 mos supervised practice to complete. Do I have to complete the 3 mos equivalent to hours? because I might be supervised by my mentor once a week only. Can anyone in my ward superviseme aside from my assigned mentor?

HCA work will not meet ONP requirements so you would be expected to do your ONP placement outside of your hours working as a HCA. ONP is to assess your abilities to work as a RN and a HCA is not a RN. Has everything been approved by the NMC including your mentor?

You may take the supervised practice in practice settings that have been properly

audited by the approved educational institution responsible for the programme.

The approved educational institution will arrange those placements as part of the

programme as well as an appropriate mentor for you. Your mentor will be a

registered nurse on the same sub-part of the Register to the one you are applying

for and will meet our standards for mentors.

hi silverdragon, the Nmc written 3 mos supervised practice on my decision letter. is it okey to do just once a week supervised practice in 3 months or do i have to complete certain hours within that 3 months? I have a confirmation to start next week for my ONP class. my mentor is one of the staff nurse in the ward where I work.

I would check with the NMC as I am not sure if one day a week for 3 months will meet requirements
