Failed NCLEX first time, waiting for 2nd att.

Hey guys, I really need some advice on somethings that I should do. I'm foreign-educated, and I already got approved to take the NCLEX. But sadly I failed on Nov 18 2013, and now I'm not sure what to do. First, the Nevada BON has approved a new policy regarding the need to have license from the country I graduated from. The thing is, I'm here now in U.S. I got approved the first time and the reason I gave them for not taking the PNLE was because I dont have plans to ever work in the Philippines. So now, does it mean I have to go back to Philippines and spend money for the plane ticket and PNLE? That's more than a thousand dollars. I can't really afford that. Another thing is that. I'm willing to apply to any other state that doesn't require a license. So if any of you guys know which states, please leave a comment or some feedback. Thanks in advance

I have the same situation as you.. I failed 3x already. Was in a depressed- giving up mode. But you just gotta keep on trying. It's just probably not our time yet. Anyways, switch states. I live in illinois.. I first tried cali but cali now changed their laws and i gotta go back to school so thats out. Someone told me to try new mexico. Thats the state im trying now. I failed in new mexico 1x.. Just this year.. I have 3 more tries. I heard another state that doesnt require phil state board is new jersey.. Also maybe indiana. Try those. Hope that helps

Not only was this a brand new requirement (effective Jan. 2013) of providing the NV BON with a copy of your country's nursing license from the country you got your BSN from, but they are more enforcing the concurrency rules now.

But it is NOT limited to the concurrency rules, we have seen others from PH not having enough clinical hours or missing certain courses.

Kababayans, do NOT just try to get an RN license from any out of state area, then try to endorse it back into your real desired state (if you know you'll encounter some issues with your educational background or if don't know) as you'll only be wasting more time and money having to still MEET the same exact requirements of the desired state's minimum requirements anyways.

I mean you can certainly still try, just be prepared to get rejected, lose the application fees and any possible needed exams (CGFNS, IELTS, etc), if your application is turned down for whatever reasons.

You can read of so many getting their licenses in these "easy, fastest and cheapest" states (HI, NY, TX) then try to endorse into other states, only to find out they are now STUCK with that state's license, having to PAY and meet the same English exam$ and getting their course$ evaluated with more fee$, then losing their endorsement application fee$ after months and months of waiting only to get the "love letter", "Sorry, your application has been declined due to ......."

The common myth is get an out of state license then it's "easy" to just endorse to any and all states, not going to happen, especially with concurrency rules or those needing a proof of the local country's nursing license.

You have to plan to simply KNOW exactly that the day you pass the NCLEX-RN, going to be THE state you will immediately start to look for a job, THE state you will watch your babies go to school till they are of college age, THE state where you begin to grow your roots.

So I can't tell you which state to best apply in, other than know that you know that it's going to be the state you buy a condo or house one day. There's a good chance it will not be in your most desired state, but there's the only choice.

I assume you guys have your SS# that allows you to work in the States.

Some state's BON's are okay without having to provide the SS# just to take the NCLEX, but will not give you the license till then. Also, know that any and all US woes requires a copy of the SS# and uses E-verify computer system to confirm it's valid for working purposes.

I take it that you'll be staying inside that state wherever you pass the NCLEX? Don't feel so bad about the NCLEX fails, it's a known stats fact from the nursing board's surveys that IEN's pass the NCLEX-RN with an average 30-35% passing rate the first-time, the sad part is that 65-70% don't make it the first time around. Sadly, the percentages drops with each re-takes, but it can be done.

Hey thanks... at this point, i really dont know where il be. I currently live in illinois. So i hope to be here.. However, i dont know in my case. Here is my story.. Im an american citizen but studied in the phil for nursing per parents advice. I didnt take the phil board because 1) im not a phil citizen.. We didnt apply because 2) i thought going back to cali- they dont need local boards. However, during the course of my 4th year of college-- somethings changed, personally.. And so i ended up in chicago instead. Over here, is very strict. Like seriously. They need local board license even if im an american citizen. So i switched states. I understand that in order to endorse here, i must work in the state il get my rn license. I failed cali 2x in a span of 4 years. ( i know i took long in between tests which is not good). I tried new mexico this year. Will try again.. Hopefully to pass. Once i pass, i will endorse to the nearest state that doesnt need local board- indiana. I have a friend who did it and was able to endorse to indiana but live in illinois. However, in order to endorse to illinois- i have to work at least 5 years (full time) in indiana. My friend couldnt do it anymore and gave up cause she travels from illinois to indiana.. I on the other hand dont mind moving else where. Other state just so i can practice and be a nurse. But ofcourse, since i have fam here in illinois- i wanna be close to them. I also dont know if i will take the expensive route-- changing to dual citizenship, then going to review in phil/take local board just so i can have rn license and go straight to illinois. The problem is-- i am the only one supporting myself. So i cant just stop everything and go back. =( i got bills and stuff. Haaaay... I dont know. Im already living paycheck to paycheck right now. So im kinda depressed at the moment. =( i need like guidance. Study group. Study buddy. I need like help. Im saving up to apply kaplan. They have a sched end of december. I havent tried them yet so im hoping my luck can change with them and il pass this 4th time.

Did you just recently re-apply in NV with the explanation of why you didn't take the NLE? If so and they haven't passed on their decision yet, I would wait before going back and spending the time and money. However, if they already did tell you after reading your explanation and still want it, then there's no other choice but to do go back. Just be aware that it may all be for nothing if upon the next reviews, shows that you're not going to meet the concurrency rules, then you're out of luck in NV.

NV BON concurrency policy goes back to 1952 and like CA and many other states have recently started to enforce those policies in the last 2 years or so. It's nothing new at all, just the surprise of the enforcement going into effect. At this time, not all states are enforcing them but have the legal rights to so at any time starting tomorrow or in the near future. It would be very difficult to change those policies since it's worked in the States for at least 20 plus years and is applicable to any and all US schools as well.

Hopefully, you'll get to just pass the NCLEX and be done with this stage. You should know that in IL, they do have a limit of 3 times re-takes of the NCLEX after that, they will require that you complete a NEW 2 year nursing program, it's in their Nursing Practice Act. But I'm not sure how the NCLEX clock starts if you failed previously, whether those other failed ones will count as the three (3) and you automatically will not qualify until the new nursing program is completed. It's best if you write to the IL BON for clarification.

IL also has a time period from the time you graduated with your BSN before you're asked to also enroll in either a refresher course or still have to do the same new nursing program in IL. It could be 3-4 years from graduation year to the time of the NCLEX application acceptance.

Again, write to the IL BON with full and complete information of your situation to get a clear picture and what lies ahead of you. The worst thing to do at this is to assume and assume then losing more time then to find out things are not what they seem. Hope for the worst and pray for the best. We can only give out so many advices, but the final decision comes from the BON's, that's your best answer.

It's failing 3x as applying in illinois state.. But i applied in a different state so i should be fine- for now. You never know with these things. They keep changing. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated

Yea, you might have to do what you previously stated earlier about if you really want to stay and work as an RN in IL meaning to go back to PH just to pass the PNLE then present the PH nursing license for endorsement purposes.

-- You might want to try to e-mail the IL BON and see if they will do a waver of the PH nursing license (as you're a USC) endorsement process AND possess a NM license to see if that will be approved. This way, if they say they can approve it, you will have written proof, but you never know if your file goes to another BON person and disagrees with that first person.

-- You should inquire about that it's been XX years since you got your BSN from PH and will that affect endorsement since it's beyond the time limit as you have no paid nursing experience and no longer qualify for the new grad programs.

Better to find out now so that you're not going to lose your endorsement fees plus the expenses of getting the PH nursing license. If they say "no", then it looks like you'll be moving to NM to find a job.

Hey guys, wow thanks for everyone's reply!! Actually I got some good news yesterday from nevada. They say I don't need to take the PNLE. All I need to do is turn in a new application and fingerprint card and that's all. The first few calls I made they said that I would have to comply with the new requirements. But I insisted that I already got approved and that I don't really have plans to work in the Philippines. So they connected me to a person. I talked to her and after a few "hold on just a minute", she came back and said that I can apply again. So, there's some hope guys if you failed in nevada and in the same situation. But it's case by case. I hope I pass the second time. I think I overworked too much. Also I never practiced questions until 265 so that was my flaw. After 75 questions, I panicked a little bit. And I didnt attack each question properly anymore. I got lazy and just wanted to go home. Next time will be different. I'll change my study habits and routine. Thanks again everyone!

What are you using to study? Mind to share email adds? Would love to get some pointers and prolly get a group study going on. Just to help out.
