Hello everybody- long time follower, first time posting.

I hope i have the right forum here, im an Australian trained registered nurse wanting some advise on applying for licensure in NYC.

I have two lil questions:::

  1. Do i need paediatrics & obstetrics to be considered for licensure? I basically don't want to be spending $$$ on CGFNS (using the form specific to NYC) to be told by BON NYC that im not eligible without these quals.
  2. Are there any states that don't require paediatrics & obstetrics to gain licensure/registration?

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who writes about their experience both good and bad, these forums really haved help answer allot of my questions...it was just these questions i couldn't find anywhere ;)

Moving thread to World Nursing section, Nurse Registration forum.

All US states require nurses to be generalist trained with theory and clinical in adults, geriatrics, mental health/psych, pediatrics, and OB/women's health. The NY Dept of Education/board of nursing specifies that the nursing education must be a general nursing education (as opposed to the specialty nursing education (pediatrics, adult, learning disabilities, etc.) offered in the UK and some other countries.

"To meet the professional education requirement for licensure as a registered professional nurse, you must present satisfactory evidence of having received at least a two-year degree or diploma from a program in general professional nursing that is acceptable to the Department." source: NYS Nursing:License Requirements
