What primary care areas have the best variety?

I'd like to know where an FNP in primary care would be most likely to encounter a wide variety of conditions.

This does not necessarily mean high acuity...I'm past the point where I think more acute conditions are more "cool" than less acute ones...but more of a range of acuities and conditions.

The only FNP I saw during clinicals was at a school-based community health clinic. It seemed like OK work, but a bit boring. I know FNPs work in retail clinics, and I suspect they deal with a limited range of minor conditions, but I might be wrong. I know FNPs can work in nephrology, internal medicine, and other areas like that, but I'm not sure what kinds of things they see.

I would imagine a true family practice office that not only sees children through the elderly, but also sees pregnant women for prenatal care, as well as newborns. To me, that would provide the most variety of ages/conditions - both acute and chronic.

"Mom & Pop" walk-in clinics, not the chain types. Believe me, they offer you the most bang for your rotation buck! May be hard to find in some areas, but the work to get in one is worth it. I work in one...the closest to an ER a NP can hope to get.

Usually more liberal, make sure they have XRay on-site, and you might not like the population they serve, but believe me...the experience is well worth what you want/need/deserve from graduate school. You will come away feeling like you can tackle anything! (except maternity, as above)

At my clinic we provide primary care for people with HIV/AIDS so there is all the primary care stuff along with the opportunistic infection and sick people stuff. I have yet to be bored or feel I see the same thing over and over (except maybe trichomonas, I could live with seeing less of that!). If anything I see a lot of weirdness that is not commonly seen, even in HIV because of the high acuity of our population.

But then, I love infectious disease and HIV care so what fascinates me might be boring to someone else, idk

Nephrology. I see dialysis pts and see lots of cardiology, derm, sick people stuff and the occasional code. Mortality is 20 per cent each yr so we deal with a lot of end of life issues too.
