Starting Salaries for NP's in Major Cities Across the US

Hi,

I would like to know what the starting salaries may be in major cities such as New York, Philadelphia, D.C., Baltimore, Miami and maybe a few West Coast opportunities. Money is an issue right now as I would be looking to pay down student loans over the next five years. SO, I would need to go where the money is. I would hope to actually get some feedback from NP's who are actually employed in these cities as I am looking to practice somewhere on the east coast when I graduate.

Go to "Advance for Nurse Practitioners" website and look for salary survey. Here's a web link:

National Salary Report 2010 on ADVANCE for NPs & PAs

They survey NPs and PAs every 2 years and break down salaries by region, practice setting, gender, etc.

Also look into the national Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program. You'd have to be willing to work with an underserved patient population for 2 years (could be urban or rural) in return for $60,000 (above your salary) to put towards your loans. You can google their website to read more about the program and see where there are jobs available.

I believe the CORP is cutting down for nurses and pharmacist. Too many applicants. They are focusing much on physicians and PA's. Dont take my word as gospel. heard from my husband who is a pharmacist.

The NHSC is not cutting back on nurse practitioners - it was a big part of additional funding in the new healthcare affordability act. I heard it from Mary Wakefield who is head of HRSA. This is great news....Here is a quote from her speech:

Our National Health Service Corps places primary care providers in underserved areas for at least two years in exchange for paying down their student loans. Earlier this month, we announced that the number of NHSC clinicians had reached 10,000, almost three times the number when President Obama took office. I’m really excited to say that with the Obama Administration’s unprecedented support, the number of nurse practitioners in the Corps has more than doubled to 1,667, and more than 200 nurse midwives are Corps members.

Yup, just got a letter from the HRSA Bureau of Clinician Recruitment Services on Friday which says they have more money for NPs than ever. It states "Half of all available funds are reserved for Nurse Practitioners." PAs, MDs, DDS, Pharmacists, etc have to divy up the rest. Application deadline for this 2012 is Feb 15th.
