Psych NP - is it for me?

I have decided I need a master's degree. I have been trying to narrow down in my mind what areas and populations I would like to work with, and psych has always been an area of interest for me, although I have not worked in psych. I have a very strong interest in working with people who have a hoarding disorder, especially animal hoarders. If I could map out a perfect job/career for myself, I would work with area animal control offices and humane societies to get referrals and work with these individuals on managing their disorder. Although this would be my "ideal", I think I would also enjoy the more common psych NP positions, since this specialty might be hard to get into. I am a school nurse, and I think I probably deal with as many psychiatric issues as I do physical issues, lol! I have always found the mind fascinating and enjoyed my mental health rotation in school a great deal.

The other degree plan I am considering is a dual MSN-MPH (Masters in Public Health) program. I could see the MPH being helpful if I pursue a specialty in hoarding, although I think the NP would serve me even better. Maybe I could do the MSN-MPH then do a certificate in psych? There are also other areas of public health that interest me, such as epidemiology, so I am a little torn on which option to pursue.

I guess my question is this - is it possible to become a Psych NP without hospital psych experience, and if so, is it a bad idea? Also, what do you think would be the best course of action given my interest in working with hoarding disorder? Thanks!

Have you checked out the size of your potential market niche?

I don't think the MPH is the idea degree for you so I'd go the NP route. Most schools probably do require at least a year of experience so I'd work on that. Then you'd know whether you like that area or want to run away screaming.

If you like animals and people I'd learn to do energy medicine or critter psych. As you know people will spend more on their pets than on their kids.

You know, that actually gave me a good idea! I have a dog that I am working on getting her canine good citizen as a first step to getting her certified as a therapy dog. It never occurred to me to combine that interest with my nursing! Not sure if my market there would be more volunteer based or employment based, but it could be fun nonetheless!

I think you are right that the MPH is probably not my best option, though. It appeals to me on one level, as I am interested in epidemiology and such, but I just don't think it is where my heart lies as far as what I want to do for the rest of my life. Thanks for the input!

OK, so I have decided on the NP program. I am a little concerned about doing a psych NP because I am not sure I will be able to find a job in my area. Is it possible to do a FNP then a post master's certificate in psych? My thinking is that if I can't find a psych position, at least I can fall back on the FNP (which would actually build on my school nursing experience also, I think).

Yes, you can do an FNP, then tack on psych. However, you shouldn't have trouble finding a psych np job...at least in most areas. Recently, I saw several in podunk Louisiana for $130,000!

Holy cow! I was born just north of podunk, Louisiana, but I am pretty content here in Texas now. I dunno, for that $$ they might tempt me back into Cajun country!
