new grad NP contract negotiation

Specialties NP

The offer is for a single physician primary care clinic, with one other PA working there. The MD wants me to work part-time and initially wanted that to be in the form of half days, M-F 1-530pm. When I went back for a second "interview" they introduced me to the office staff as the new provider and then sent me home with a packet of paperwork to fill out.

I never formally accepted the position. I tried to discuss the schedule with the manager as I will need to maintain another job for health insurance purposes (I have already met my max out of pocket for the year on my current insurance and can't afford COBRA working part time). and they said they would work on it and to bring the papers back on Monday.

Just trying to get some feedback as to what is standard in the contract. The hourly rate is pretty reasonable but some of the other benefits and clauses I'm unsure of.

1. The job is part-time but it says I'd be working "from 20 hours up to 40 hours, but not to exceed 40 hours" - that clearly needs to be addressed, but is it normal to have such a broad range built in, I'm used to travel contracts which are strict with their hours

2. 90 day notice for resignation

3. 2 weeks vacation

4. Up to 7 sick days

5. $1000 and 5 days for CME EVERY OTHER year

6. After 90 days employer will pay 50% of health insurance premiums

7. All employment outside the practice must be approved by the employer

8. No professional services to be provided outside of the clinic (included paid or unpaid). All professional time and efforts should be devoted to the employer

9. 3 year non-compete within a 10 mile radius of the clinic, or any patient of the clinic regardless of the location.

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

I officially turned it down about an hour ago. I spoke to the manager today regarding the schedule and what they had come up with to replace the M-F 1-530 was 3 days 1-7, a full day on Friday and 1-2 Saturdays per month. They said they would be keeping the clinic open later for me to get more hours in. That still meant 4-5 days per week, only about 26 hours most weeks, and being in a solo provider position during the after hours part of the day. They said that they don't have the space to have another provider in the mornings (in the afternoon they plan to take over the specialty clinic's rooms on the other side of the office). I couldn't see the office staff being happy about a sudden change in their hours/lifestyle because a new NP showed up. Plus, why were they looking to hire an extra person if they didn't have the space for them to work in? I had also broached the subject of my concerns with the non-compete and no outside employment. After I talked to the manager on the phone and told her that I didn't feel comfortable with those hours, she emailed me and asked that I make a list of all my concerns by tomorrow so she can speak to the doctor about them. I replied with a respectful declination of the offer.

Good for you!

Thanks! I'd rather hold out a little longer and take a job I feel good about, rather than jump at the first offer I get and be miserable just for the sake of 'getting my foot in the door'.

Good to stand your ground, but I would have still furnished a list of concerns. Specifically bite the inability to work elsewhere at a job that's rationally part time. I'd tell them if they want something like that then they would need to pay you full time rate for the part time work. You never know... They might need someone THAT bad.
