Masters in Nursing outside the USA

Hello ,

I have a BSN and RN license from State of NY. I would like to purse my MSN and become a Nurse Practitioner (NP).

However -I might have to move to UK for 2-3 years as my husband has an overseas job opportunity in London.

I was thinking of pursuing my Masters in Nursing in the UK and wanted to ascertain if that would enable me to take the NCLEX-PN back here in the USA. I would much appreciate if any of you have had the experience or are aware of a situation wherein somebody got their MSN outside the USA but took the NCLEX-PN here in the US.

I'm confused. The NCLEX-PN is for practical nursing (LVN and LPN). Why would you want to take the NCLEX-PN if you already have a BSN and RN?

If you are asking can you be licensed as an NP if you take your MSN in another country thats a different story.

Thank you for your response. I apologize if I have been unclear -Yes the question I am asking is "Can I take the MSN in a different country and will that make me eligible to qualify as a Nurse Practitioner here in the USA".Many thanks again.

I would image you would have to apply to the state and let them determine through your transcripts to whether they will accept it or not. Alternatively if you can get a copy of your syllabus before hand and discuss with the state they may be able to indicate how it will be.

Have you looked at any courses in the UK yet just to give you an idea on what it will entail?

NPs have to be certified (by meeting the educational requirements and passing the certification exam) by one of the national NP professional/accrediting organizations (the specific organization depends on which NP specialty you're pursuing). That organization would also have to approve/accept your graduate degree in order for you to end up as an NP.

If it were me, I would make very sure that the specific degree from the specific school I was considering would be accepted by both my state and the appropriate national NP organization before I paid any tuition or spent time in any classes.

I completed a Canadian NP program, was unable to sit for certification from AANP or ANCC, but I did recieve a great education that I do not regret. It made my 2 american NP programs much easier.

For Certification from ANCC, NCC, AANP I believe you need to graduate from a NLN or CCNE accredited program. AANP mentions another pathway on their website but good luck having any information from them.

University of Dundee has american accredation for their MN in nursing but they do not have a NP focus.

You can always do onsite training there and add a distance learning american NP program during or after.

Education is never a bad investment and if you have the chance it might be worth taking the program.
