I have recently come to realize that there is a MSN available now as a NP in Integrative Health/Holistic Nursing... I may have finally found my niche! Now, can anyone tell me more about this field of nursing? How marketable do you think it is/will be? The thought of going back to school terrifies me! I need some good feedback to help me decide whether this is the route to go.

Is this the UCSF program? I'm an FNP student who intends to practice integrative health. I have training in Asian medicine and Zen Shiatsu, plus shamanism. Can't wait till summer when I get more training with American Indians and Inkas.

I wish! No... I'm a divorced mom of two young kids working full time every weekend and stuck in Kansas! If I can manage it financially I'll probably do an online program, quite possibly University of Phoenix Online (that's what I'm researching at least). UCSF is only a dream of mine! *sigh*

Oz Rebel - on the subject of integrative medicine, how open is your area to it? I'm moving to KC in 4 weeks to begin an accelerated BSN at Research. I'm also an acupuncturist and my fiance is about to graduate with her master's in acupuncture so we are hoping that the low number of providers means the area is an untapped goldmine.

One of my acupuncture classmates that is also a FNP is working with a college in Portland to include integrative medicine as part of the clinical nursing doctorate.

Sounds like an awesome field to be in. Would you be working with physicians in Integrative practices or in private practice for yourself? I've noticed here in New England, it's the wealthier areas that tend to support the more alternative options, and practioners. I wish more people had the chance to be exposed to other ways of practicing healthcare. Wish you the best.

See, that's what I don't have a good feel for... I don't know what the marketability here will be like. I'm hoping like you say that it's an untapped goldmine, but I have my doubts being in the midwest. And my ability to move to a more profitable area is hampered because of my kids and the divorce.

I'm a Research alum! Did the 4 yr joint program with Rockhurst back in 83-87. I've heard nothing but great things about their accelerated BSN program... good luck!

My fiance has contacted over 15 acupuncturists in the KC area for her practice management class and overall it looks like the area is almost ready for integrative medicine. There are still some issues to work out, such as the lack of licensing in KS for real acupuncturists (while MD/DOs can practice w/o any training), but overall, it looks good.

Glad to hear about the program. I'm hoping by the end of the one-year program that I know [for certain] about which way I want to go: MD or FNP.
