FNP indie practice: Internist supervisor OK?

Re: starting an indie practice as FNP, specifically with regard to the supervising MD and our scope of practice requirements... If we plan to treat the whole family, is an Internist per se adequate from a medicolegal standpoint or is the only good or legal option a Family Practice doc as supervising MD?

Thanks guys,

Internal medicine is the new family medicine. Many family physicians are actually trained in internal medicine, and insurance counts them as PCPs. Seems like a fine choice for an FNP collaboration.

family medicine being trained in internal medicine is not the same as internal medicine being competent in family medicine

A med/peds would also make a good collaborating physician for an FNP but they can be even more few and far between.

Also a PCP doesn't mean the provider is prepared to treat anyone. OB/GYNs can also be PCPs but I don't see men or kids on their pt roster

Internal medicine boarded physicians do not treat children, neonates, or do deliveries. They are akin to AGNPs in this regard.

Pediatric boarded physicians do not treat adults. They are similar to PNPs in this regard.

Family medicine physicians treat the entire lifespan and are akin to FNPs in this regard.

All at considered PCPs but they are not all the same in scope.
