Hi

I Graduated from a FNP program in May. Passed my boards in June and am looking for employment in Maryland. I've used the internet career sites and sent resumes to Doctors in the area. Does anyone have any more advice or ideas.

Thanks

I got a job!!!!!! Finally took the yellow pages and sent a cover letter and my resume to nearby offices - the office that hired me knew someone on the resume list who gave me a good reference.

Thanks

Hi there and congrats on graduation and passing boards. Does your state have an APN organization? If so, I would join them. If not, how about joining your local RN specialty organization? Networking is where I've been most successful.

anyone know how to get experience in ER, without having to be house staff? Maybe committing as a independent contractor or using an agency that will give me a 1099? Thanks F

There are a lot of locums and part time position in the ER, Fast Track and Urgent care. Good way to supplement your income. Usually you work for the companies that are contracted with the hospitals to staff the ER. Outside of Academia most physicians and NPPs do not work for the hospital.

what are locums? How do I get in touch with the companies that contract? Do they usually train? Thanks for the info Fran

Locums is short for Locum tenens which is latin for placeholder. This is somebody that contracts to work for a provider for a period of time (or cover when a provider has left). As far as getting in touch with a company it depends on where you want to work. Usually there is one group of company that will have a contract for a particular ER. In the PA world there are a ton of advertisements for these companies in all the journals. I am not sure how this works in the NP world (I am assuming that you are looking for an NP position). Also right now in some states there is some confusion on the appropriate certification for the ER. As far as training they usually expect you to know the basics but will work with people to develop the right skill set (mostly procedures).
