Advocacy: Most New Yorkers Support NP independence

    A total of 1,078 votes were cast in the poll. Of those, 73.38 percent were in favor of giving nurse practitioners more independence, while 15.86 percent were opposed. Another 7.88 percent of voters said they were "leaning towards" giving nurse practitioners more independence, while 1.58 percent said they were "leaning against" the idea. Only 1.3 percent of voters said they were undecided.

    This is great to see. The Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act is now in the education committee budget meetings (or whatever they are called, I forget). But, this is better than other years and versions of the bill. Also, Gov. Cuomo called for enactment of the bill in January. Looks like NY is moving towards better NP practice. The bill removes the collaborative agreement after 3600 hours of practice. Also allows for APNs to supervise other APNs -- duh!

    This bill does not include the CNS. NY does not recognize the CNS as an APRN and does not allow CNS prescriptive authority.

    Thats great, I didn't know much about this bill. Any idea what the current status is?

    That's great! Hope to see more states adopt this.

    It's great to see that the doctors argument isn't gaining traction with the general public. They are realizing the value of having NP providers and the holes in the argument against it. Keep us informed as it progresses.

    I'm really hoping it becomes reality this time. Similar bills have been shut down every year for years...
