There are different types of massage therapy. There is the mostly widely known Swedish massage with oils. The kind I do is with clothes on, no oils and is medially based. It is a combination of trigger point therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, manual lymph drainage, acupressure, to name a few aspects of it. Add in nutritional support, and a nurse's knowledge and common sense and I can help most people in some way or another. The whole idea is to balance the systems and regions of the body, especially effective with neuromuscularskeletal dysfunctions. I use the GUT Method, which was developed by Elena Goetzel after years of "putting it all together". Very interesting!!! and effective!!
So.... let's talk!!!

Hello nurseyperson, I am the president of the National Association of Nurse Massage therapists and would like to let you and other nurses and massage therapists be aware that there are many others practicing this recognized nursing specialty. At present, we are working to receive a grant from the ANA and the Hartford Foundation to educate fellow nurse massage therapists on the skills to assess and treat geriatric patients. Our January conference will bring together nurse massage therapists to educate NMT's in this subspecialty. I would love to hear the ideas and experiences you have had. SpencerRN,LMT

I am in a small midwestern town, and use mostly swedish type massage. I am taking my massage chair once a week into the hospital and working on employees. They love me and it is helping decrease stress levels! What are others doing?

Wthlyne........Now, that is what I call a website! I am impressed. It is not only pleasing to the eyes and the inner soul, but so many links and information. I never got through it all. You look like you are one busy massage RN.

I had my small holistic nurse practice in calif. , mostly out-call for seniors and had an office at a DC's. But since moving to hawaii 2 years ago, I had to go back to conventional nursing for financial reasons. I miss my practice.

I am now in North carolina and have to take almost most of my massage education again before i can set up practice. It is frustrating that it is not covered at all under my RN licence here. I noticed that the rates for the 500-600 hour programs have gone up considerably. One priviate school here is asking 15K for 600 hours. What a rip off. I could get my masters or Ph.D. in nursing for that kind of money.

I am a perpetual student like you, but I was greatly amazed at the amount of alternative classes you have taken. Keep up the good work...........

Can you tell me approx. waht it costs to have a website like yours to be set up? Did you like what they did and did you assist them or did they do all the research?

For those of you that are still thinking of starting your own nurse massage practice, I can tell you again that there is nothing like it in the world. It is the roots of nursing and a complete nursing!

Hi there,
I feel your frustration. There are many times that I look back and say if I had spent the money I spent on my massage related trainings on a degree, I would be much better off. The problem would have been that I might not have experienced the personal growth I did in the process. As for your questions re web site and NC credentialing, e-mail me through my web site or better yet, call me at my office and we can talk. We may play phone tag, but let me know the best time to reach you and I will do my best.
Best wishes,
Ethlyne

Default Nursing Massage Therapist
I am in Tampa Bay Florida and just discovered a school that is offering medical professionals the opportunity to transfer existing A & P hours into a Massage Therapy Program. Apparently, you then only need 300 more hours to prepare to sit for the National Exam. Is anyone familiar with something like this

Default Massage and Aging
Well, I hope I have done this right. I'm brand new on this forum and have been spending hours trying to post! I am one of the board members of NANMT too and am very excited to hear from all of us who realize that real nursing includes massage therapy. My specialty is geriatric massage and I teach it throughout the country. I am always looking for ways to improve helping the seniors improve their quality of life so if anyone has ideas, let's hear from you! (i.e. lymph, energy work) Hey to Ethlyne and Spencer!
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have massage therapy as one of the subjects taught in nursing schools? That has been my hope for at least 10 years.
I have been a nurse for many years, mostly home care and hospice. Recently, I thought I would relax and work in a nursing home . But I realized how touch deprived they are and how short handed the facilities are.
We live down here in North Carolina, have 3 sons, 4 grandsons and 1 grandaughter. I'm presently taking canine massage. There's just soo much to learn!
