Why Is It That Everyone Thinks They're A Good Nurse?

i don't get it. people write about the horrible mistakes they've made that got them fired from work or suspended, and then they'll go on to say that they know they're a good nurse anyway because they try so hard. maybe the evidence shows that they're not a good nurse yet . . . but if they keep trying hard they will be some day?

or the nurse who writes that she's on her fourth job since graduation 16 months ago, and she hasn't found her "nitch" yet . . . and someone tells her to hold her head up because they know she's a great nurse. really? how could you possibly know that -- especially with the evidence provided that the poster has been through three jobs and is failing her fourth?

then there are the special nurses who know they're great nurses despite their many problems at work because they have a calling. or because they're compassionate. sorry -- that's not all it takes to be a great -- or even an adequate nurse.

what ever happened to striving to be a good nurse but knowing you're not there yet? knowing you need a bit more experience to be a great nurse but you're trying hard? how come everyone these days is a good nurse the moment they graduate?

Most rural nurses excel at one very important thing: we manage whatever comes our way with few resources. Simply because we have to.

Like a nightshift nurse. And if you're a rural night nurse, you can do anything!!

what a hasty generalization. i can only imagine what the response would be towards me if i posted that all experienced nurses are mean, wicked, nasty and eat their young.

I can take criticism, constructive or otherwise. All I ask is that if you are telling me I am doing it wrong, show me the right way.

You need to be able to accurately self evaluate in order to improve.

That being said, I once gave my self all exceeds expectations. See, they called me in to do an evaluation based on my performance for the year. Since I was out on short term disability and didn't work the entire year, I thought I did extremely well. The supervisor that did my evaluation decided that I only met expectations, and didn't want Corporate to think I thought highly of my ability to perform my Paramedic functions from home. Go figure.

because they work for organizations that place way too much emphasis on "excellence", and they feel pressured to call themselves excellent in order to get their penny raises. i also think it's because too many nurses are type a (for ******) personalities, and so are their managers. if they don't say they are excellent, their managers will get them fired. if new grads are not seen as excellent, their preceptors stab them in the ******* back, making them look like they are unsafe and incompetent. one cannot expect new grads to have all the answers when they graduate, but it seems that some nurses will rip you apart if your personality is not like theirs, ie. arrogant, overconfident know-it-alls.

i'm still angry over what has happened to me this week, and i will say no more.

i rather think that people who throw out hints like that on a public forum really do want to talk about it -- they just want to be coaxed first. if they really didn't want to talk about it, they wouldn't have had to say anything.

Oh wow. Seems I've said too much. I'm not one to spill the beans that easily, but a lot has happened this week and I am very, very angry about it. I can't give too much away in public. All I'll say is this was not an attack on your post Ruby. I was just venting.

I would rather address what I'm upset about in a private message because I don't want to be identified easily. Although what happened to me is a common occurrence in nursing.
