No need to be upset at the truth! Change careers

Nurses Relations

Published

One thing that has baffled me on this website is individuals always are up in arms when the truth is, if you have no passion for the profession you need to make life decisions for yourself. Most individuals come on allnurses.com to complain about the nursing profession, long hours, nursing staff, arrogant doctors. The truth is, this is not Mcdonalds where you work the job because it's a requirement for survival. You entered into college and chose a profession that makes you miserable, spent countless hours studying a subject that you have no interest in, and entered the work field to make others who are passionate about their careers miserable. Yet, many complain that the healthcare field has taken a turn for the worse. Has it ever occurred to those same individuals, if there was no passion for the career to begin with there would be none after starting your first, second, third, or even tenth position?

Maybe it's my family values that taught me, if I don't love what I do there is no way I will ever be successful in life. Success is not defined by the basic salary, but level of contentment with my life all together.

So I say, if you hate nursing make life decisions so the rest of us can enjoy our jobs.

clearly double chemo is an amazing person -- we're not all that perfect. you'll understand this when you're old enough to have dealt with some real problems of your own, but sometimes we just cannot leave our personal problems outside the door. some people always have personal problems that they cannot leave at the door; i'm not addressing that. but there are nurses who have personal problems that they're dealing with that you do not even begin to understand. not everything can be left behind so easily, nor should it be.

i will not understand fully until i am a nurse, and i am not on chemo but i do have alot of problems. but at the end of the day i know i will deal with it and move on. that is just who i am.i am 26 and i have 2 kids. one 20 month old and one 10 month old. my income is 490 a month and my rent is 530 plus bills. i can't find a job. i have been through a lot even before this ordeal. so yeah i would love to take someones place if they don't want their job and not just for the money but because i will be good at it. and i know that. it may be stressful sometimes but i have been through worse and smiled at the end of the day so. yeah..

not everyone can realistically meet their responsibilities to their families and financial responsibilites after investing the time and money only to find out their chosen carreer is not a good match.

yeah, this!

actualy NURSE practictioners prescribe medications and DIAGNOSE..so..uhm still not getting what your saying...I administer medications including injections..so..anyways my point is nursing wasn't always a title for what nurses do now so why get hung up on the specific of that it wasn't always called nursing. And like I said before NURSE practitioners prescribe medications and DIAGNOSE and ...whats your point? they are not Doctors they are Nurses...medical field is anything that has to do with medicine..I don't know where you live ...maybe you guys have a different definition..

I think that having a job period is a blessing...there are millions of unemployed americans who would willingly trade places with those who hate their job as nurse...just a thought. Be happy for what you have while you have it.

Thank you!

Some people self identify with passions in which they are unable to make a living. Aside from trust fund babies, most of us have to work for a living and nursing is a good choice in terms of financial stability. Not everyone wants to be 'remembered' for their outstanding contributions in their careers. Some people just want a stable job with a decent income so they can go home and then engage in what they consider their real lives and there is NOTHING wrong with that. Not every nurse cares to emulate Florence Nightingale.

Even though I am not a nurse and I can not tell you what you have been through. By the way I commend all you nurses who actually do your job. But I do know what I want to do and I do know personally what I CAN handle. I don't know hands on but I do know what it in tells and I am not completely clueless as to what a nurse does and what a nurse goes through. I have nurses in my family and as I stated before my MA teacher who also was a flight nurse, has given me a lot of insight as well. Only I know what I will do you can't assume because I haven't been there yet I don't know what I would do in that situation. Like I said I have been in far worse situations and I love helping people and its something that burns inside of me not just an occupation. and no you dont have to have a passion but I do and I speak for myself when I say that ...Like over and over I have said you can have a bad day ..week or whatever but when it affects the patient just because you want to have a whining session thats unacceptable...I believe but that is my opinion

Agreed. Not every nurse has to be passionate but don't give patients the minimal care just because your doing it "for the money". Thats all I'm saying. And I don't want to be recognized for what I do it's not the attention. It's how it makes me feel to know I helped someone and the fact that I love the subject of medicine. So in turn a lot of nurses who do it because they are passionate about it don't necessarily always want recognition.

Anyways I wish all of you good luck whether you enjoy your job or not but I just pray for those patients... and pray they don'[t get the crappy end of the stick because you're having a bad day...

You know, I've just got to say it. Maybe you should take the chip off your shoulder. It must be weighing you down severely.

Yay!!!! Another thread where non-nurses get to tell us how crappy we all are!!!!

You don't know me so what chip would I be having on my shoulder? I am a strong person and strongly opinionated. If that means I have a chip on my shoulder than so be it.If you think I have a chip on my shoulder because I feel so strongly about medicine then so be it. But please clarify how you just had to tell me I have a chip on my shoulder for what reason would that be?

Yay!! If you read my post I commended the ones who actually do their job!:) but not the ones who whine like little babies because I know people personally that are nurses and are on the verge of dying that don't **** and whine so there you go.
