Anyone here ever date/go out/marry a patient. I personally have never done it, but have seen it happen....i recall one time a male nurse dated a patients daughter...We got her on our floor one day after she attempted suicide, he had cheated on her.

Another employee dated a patient and married them........They both were married prior.......

Just curious if anyone else has seen this

Never dated a patient, been married since Noah's ark, but have seen some situations. Head nurse married a former patient, this man was handsome, rich, wonderful sense of humor, and single. They started dating after his discharge, married and were together almost 7 years. He died, will was read, then his first family hit the roof. He left her the lions share of the estate, they filed charges with the board, said she influenced his decisions, she was put on probation for 2 years. Worked with another nurse, started a relationship with a patient while his was in hospital, he said wife had filed for divorce, she hadn't but did when she came to visit and caught them kissing. Wow, was there fireworks that day. She lost her job, almost lost her license, and he was a no good cheater who went back to wife after she nursed him back to health. Worked with a CNA who started dating the son of a patient, she was married, hubby got curious, seems she had some new items she just could not afford, he followed her one night when she said she was called in for work. Caught wife and man at a bar, waited and shot them both on the way out of the place. He got a very light sentence. Worked with a nurse who flirted with one of the attendants everyday, all day, but would not accept a date from him, not enough money, he was going to school but was a very tight lipped guy about most things, when he finished school, he got a really good job, around 100,000.00/yr with a company in Ky. She was ready to date him then. He laughed, invited me and 3 other older ladies who treated him like our son to a special dinner and told us, her name is posted at school as a gold-digger. She finally left for NC, no guys from the area wanted to date her. Heard she married and has been divorced 3 times.

Know a nurse who is dating a coworker now, not a situation open for discussion as both are married. Both of their spouses are doing more checking than they realize, soon the explosions will start.

As humans we cannot control who we are attracted to, but we can control our actions. My license means more to me than a few minutes of heavy breathing with some guy who may or may not be as "good as he looks".

My first instinct, as the child of hippies, would not be to condemn nurse-patient dating, but you know, I was in the ER a couple weeks ago (broke m'hand) and the nurse doing my hx asked me out. It was kind of weird. Not in a sexual-harassy, power issue way, just in the way that I then had to kind of hang out with this person for the next few hours, and it was a little awkward. So, um, just don't ask pts out while doing the initial hx, I guess. Wait until they are walking out the door, so if they say no it's not uncomfortable! :roll:

Specializes in OB/peds (after gen surgery for 3 yrs).

My best friend from high school started dating one of her patients when we were in nursing school. She married him and they have been together for, wow, 24 years? 25? Something like that. And she married him, KNOWING what was the matter with him, LOL! :chuckle

I was joking more than anything.........Im sure there are many, many, many horror stories...............

There are two sides to every coin. I guess that I can't see anything to joke about when human emotions and lives are involved.......but I did notice - IMHO - that you are displaying some ambivalence about this subject.....

I am sure this happens more often than we think.

Prior to nursing I had a career as a Correctional Officer in a state prison. Even in that feild Nurses would have relationships with their patients. Yes the patients were inmates!!!!

At least once a month we watched a nurse get escorted off of the grounds in handcuffs for having a relationship with a "patient" It is a felony

So stupidity is a crime.

We had a discussion at work one day about this subject.......A nurse dated a patients daughter, she tried to kill herself when he dumped her, and then she became a patient, then her mom a patient again.......and it was just a mess.....SO i was just wondering how often it occurred and if there were any happy stories out there.
