hello all!

currently a nurse in cleveland, ohio and i really want to relocate somewhere warm, that is close to the beach! so i need some help!! any recommendations on where to live? i am an icu nurse, and would like a large teaching hospital that does big surgeries, and preferably has a good reputation (i am not a community hospital kind of nurse). Interested in approximately what nurses make in NC and any other information you may find to be helpful, thanks!!!

I haven't lived in NC in a while, and I grew up in the more central/western part of the state, but check into East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. I don't know how far they are from the beach, and what the hospitals are like in the area, but they do have a nursing school and a medical school.

Hello! We will be moving to NC in late July and Im looking for a 2 yr nursing school. We just returned from visiting Raleigh and Durham. I believe we will be looking at living in Durham. any suggestions on the follow? Schools looking for a two yr program but will do 4 if I have to), Homes? (90,000 or less) Im looking to get a PT job as a UC or ER Tech if I cant get into school fairly soon, any suggestions on that? Any info would be really great.

As far as I know, the only hospital in NC that has what you're looking for is New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington (big beautiful place right near the Ocean). You'll have to check it out online - it's a large Teaching hospital, Level II Trauma, they're constantly growing.

It's in the Beautiful Port City of Wilmington - gorgeous old downtown area with a River Walk, tons of cute shops in old Cotton Mills, restaurants, clubs, touristy stuff, etc. (a lot like Savannah). Best part is it's near some of the best beaches - minutes from Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure Beaches and a short drive to my favorite place (Topsail Island). The pay rate here is pretty good, I'm sure with your ICU experience, you'd be making a nice salary. If I could get my husband to move to the Coast, New Hanover is the place I'd want to work... Housing at the coast isn't cheap, but a few friends from Nursing School moved there a few years ago and said it wasn't much more expensive than the Raleigh area where I live. But... if you are looking for 'cool' stuff, Duke or UNC might be worth being 2-3 hours from the beach? Otherwise, ECU is closer to the coast but smaller. And New Hanover... Wilmington is awesome! We looked at it and the recruiter my husband spoke to said there were 30 ICU beds total... but that may have just been cardiac units. I know they don't have a PICU. :)

I HOPE IT'S NOT TOO LATE!!!! I believe this poster may have had the best of intentions when posting this, however I believe it is based on second hand info or the work of a creative recruiter. I took my first travel assignment in Wilmington at New Hanover Regional Medical Center's CCU in 1999. I worked there for a year. It was okay. I have lived in Wilmington since (still traveling for work though in Eastern NC + SC) but still have many friends working NHRMC (+ Cape Fear Campus).

First of all, the "teaching hospital" designation is a loooong stretch of the words, and an absolute joke. If you have worked at a real (University based) teaching hospital you will be thoroughly disappointed. They have a family medicine residency. Most "true" teaching hospitals won't even allow these residents to admit to or write orders in the ICU's. (No disrespect - I love my FP MD's, but as residents not ready for everything).

Also, NHRMC used to be a pretty good place to work, but the current CEO has determined RN's to be disposable and you work in an environment in which you are clearly told - if you don't do this you will be fired. (What other hospital are you going to work for here.) I acknowledge this part is second hand info for me, but I have first hand witnessed the tears of several people while being told this, the last time 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately some people with families are stuck.

If anyone is looking to get to the Carolina Coast, Pitt County Memorial Hospital is okay (I've worked CCU, stepdown, tele there, but it is not a beachy area.

I would highly recommend looking into Charleston, SC. The pay rate there is actually a little higher than Wilmington because there is actually comptetition. (State, VA, + 2 private systems) The private hospitals pay, but I don't recommend them (I've worked them all). Medical University of South Carolina sounds like exactly what you are looking for. They pay a little less, but state benefits, and their nurses are revered. It is 100% teaching hospital, state referral center, top notch residents + fellows, top ranking in cardiology (I remember when they were one of 5 hospitals in the US doing alcohol ablations for IHSS - people were coming from all over the world), top ranking in GI and others, a transplant facility (one time they did a heart and liver at the same time - 1 STICU RN + 1 CVICU RN for the pt.), I could go on here, but then someone would accuse me of being a recruiter....my point being consider carefully. And to anyone who decides to go to Wilmington, remember you were warned.

My goal is to make life better for all nurses.

I did have the best of intentions though. The OP was looking for a hospital at the NC coast, which is why I mentioned NHRMC - a couple of friends from school work there and love it. I haven't heard anything about Nurses being threatened, but that's not to say that it doesn't happen. Their website states that it's a Level II teaching hospital, that's why I added that info. Your Charleston recommendation is also a good one. I lived down there years ago and loved the whole area, but prefer the NC Coast.

As I said, "no offense", and it was either / or. I know you meant to help this member, I just happened to be in a better place to do it right now. ABSOLUTELY nothing personal, I just hate for someone to fall into a trap here, as I've been around a while and know how bad it is.

On the other hand, I am not completely negative. If you read the post I wrote about your current hospital (JMH?) you'll see it was (against my own self interest) remarkably positive. I guess in a way I'm jealous of you.

Also, I'm glad you are creative. Kevin has a really good sense of humor. And tell Beth with Cards some travel nurse said she'd bring her some krispy kreme's soon. (Don't worry, she probably won't know either.)
