Second Degree, Low GPA, Options?

Hi All!

Hoping for a bit of advice. I graduated in 2011 with a BS in Pathology. I'd like to go back to school to get my RN. The catch- a poor Undergrad GPA (below 3.0) due to ADD.

My first option was an ABSN- but I was told to get into an ABSN program like Queen's, it would require me to retake too many classes to get my GPA up to even be competitive.

My next option was an Associates program. I figure the requirements are a bit lower, and I can always complete a RN to BSN program later.

General Advice? Tips? I am a bit overwhelmed researching schools and nervous that my poor undergrad choices caused this career change to be too far out of reach.

Are there any degree programs I should be looking at (preferably in the Charlotte area)?Are there any financial aid options for those seeking second degrees? Anyone run into issues getting hired with an Associates?

Even if you found an ABSN program with a minimum GPA requirement of 2.75, you qualify to apply but you are not competitive for a slot. You can apply to ASN and traditional BSN programs, you need to do very well on your prerequisites.

You can re take courses. Look at the required courses and take them over to raise your grade. I did this and applied and applied before I was finally accepted to a diploma program. Good luck to you!

I'd look into retaking some of the classes you've done poorly in, especially if they're prerequisite classes. Even if the minimum GPA is a 2.75, I guarantee you that if you asked the school for the averages for the last few classes admitted that the average admitted GPA will be significantly higher than that (like 3.5+). Having a good current track record in retaking classes and any prerequisites you may be deficient in may help bridge the gap a little with your low GPA.

I'm literally in the same situation. GPA from previous degree is a 2.8 so I'm looking to start my CNA course and start taking some prerequisites for nursing school . I'm looking to apply to a community college to obtain my ADN (NO more loans needed!!!) I I'm basically starting from scratch all over again, although it can be overwhelming I'm willing to work towards a more promising & versatile field.
