In the past 2 wks I have gotten probably 10 phone calls from a Nurse Recruitment Company for positions open at Duke University, with the majority of positions in critical care. I told them that I would think about it, as Im in grad school right now, and have a hubby and 2 teenagers to think about as well.

Is the shortage there really that bad?? Or is the hospital just expanding that fast? Also, what is the cost of living there compared to salary?

Im game, but convincing my family is another story. I had a really good friend a few yrs ago that lives in Raleigh, but I havent been able to get in touch with them lately to talk to them about the area or the hospital.

Any ideas, or comments??

I really think that the shortage itself is in qualified critical care nurses. I know that in Western North Carloina .... there is clearly a shortage of qualified critical care nurses, yet the other positions, such as med-surg, etc .. seem to be filled.

I've heard there were some management issues that created huge turnover in certain critical care areas at Duke. I was offered more money at UNC hospital than I was at Duke. There are pros and cons of working at both.
