I am interested in working for Duke University, but I would like some input from people who have worked there. How are they to work for? What's the typical starting salary? How are the benefits? Any other info would be appreciated.

While I was working with the VA, many of our residents were from Duke and they said that the learning enviroment was exceptional. I have also talked with many nurse friends that say Duke is a great place to work. Politics much like any place else, but if you are into a teaching hospital, then it is a great place to be. I can not tell you about salary, but I am sure it is competitive, given that they must compete with other hospitals for the nurses. Good luck.

hi, i'm starting ns and after graduation my husband and i are moving to wake co. nc. i was just wondering if there is anyone that works at duke? if so, can you tell me anything that would be helpful (working enviorment, benefits, job satisfaction, pay,etc.). i have heard duke is a really good hospital to work for and right now i am just trying to see what my options are. i know it is pretty far away from graduation,but this is a big move for us and i don't want to make that move blindfolded! thanx for the help!

i have been working at duke for the last 2 years. it's not a bad place to work, benifits are comparable to other hospitals. the education you get is great and working with the interns/residents has its ups and downs but overall i have really enjoyed it. the pay however is not good at all. i started at duke with 1 years experience, and now after 3 years of nursing i am only making $1.00 -$1.50/hour more than a new grad starting at duke. the greatest benifit i see is having the duke name on your resume. good luck.

RNPATL is right about the enviroment. i have been at duke for just over 2 years now and for the most part have enjoyed it. the pay however is below the other hospitals in the area. unfortunately duke relies on its name to get nurses instead of paying the wages. but if you want the experience its worth losing a little money for a few years then move on. good luck
