ADN Degree "Is it worth it?"

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

I am looking for any input and suggestions from any future, past or present nurses. I am located in North Carolina and currently have a steady job with good pay however, i have always wanted to become a nurse and feel like now it is a good time in my life. I have a degree (non health care related) and have all pre nursing classes completed including CNA. I enjoyed my CNA class but now as i look and research the nursing market here in NC i am afraid there may not be the job security in nursing that i have in my current job. I will only be planning to get my ADN at the present time but have no problem with continuing my education in the future. I guess my question is are there still jobs for new grad ADN students in the triad (Asheboro, Pinehurst, Greensboro, High Point) area of NC?? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated and thank you all for taking the time to read.

Specializes in Pediatric Emergency.

I have my ADN (currently in the process of getting my BSN) and have been offered 4 hospital jobs as a new grad. However, in my one state of NJ I was not so lucky. The new grads who got jobs there were people who had worked as CNAs or people with their bsns.

I am a ADN with 11yrs experience if I were to return to school now I would get my BSN don't waste your time with or put yourself in a position where if you wanted to continue your education you would need to first obtain your BSN.

Hello,

I also am in the same position as u, I have a degree (non health care related) and I am debating on whether or not I should get my associates or pursue a bsn from the get go.

Every nurse I talk to says for me to go ahead and get my BSN. But I am already pretty in far in debt from my 1st degree that I am not even using right now. Plus with accelerated programs, I am told its impossible to work full time and I have two children right now to support. An associates degree looks like it would be a better option cost wise.

But I do know that the Cone Health System in Greensboro will hire u with an Associates degree but u had to have already been working in the system as an CNA or LPN. And they will require u to obtain your BSN within 5 years of signing your contract. High Point Regional I think is the same way.

Duke Hospital hires nurses with Associates degrees and will help pay for you to obtain a BSN.

I hope that helps and good luck!
