we have invested in the guardrails systems for iv pumps, pca, and syringe pumps and they have the feature of a pressure sensitive disc for the syringe pump. is this feature specific for nicu populations:clown:?

I'm not sure. All new Alaris pumps can use the syringe modules, but I don't see why you'd use them in adult populations. The adult/peds PCA module is it's own thing....

I would say it is used only in peds/NICU, but is built into all their syringe pump modules.

steve..our our peds hospital we use the iv pump and the pca attachement. we are also getting the alaris syringe pumps for our young pt. My question was....who uses the pressure sensitive disc on the syringe pumps? (wasn't clear..my bad). since we haven't received the syringe pumps for use yet...i was wondering if discs were used always, sometimes, or never with the syringe pumps?

In my last unit, all our syringe pump tubing had a built in pressure disc which was inserted in the module. Not all tubing has this disc. So it depends on which tubing your unit stocks. No disc = no pressure monitoring.

Our problem was that if the disc was not inserted in the pump, it tended to swell up with fluid instead of infusing it into the baby.

We use the alaris pumps with guardrails, our lines don't have the discs so that part is just ignored! Pumps work fine without.

Ps how great are guardrails when you're being hassled by a weepy mum and trying to work out your dopamine dosage :loveya:

Or some genius resident ordered the Dopa, Dobut and PGE at all different concentrations....

We have smart pumps, I'm told the pressure monitoring is a built in feature.
