This is something I need to find out for a class I'm taking:

Is giving the Low Birth Weight baby hind (high fat) milk used in NICU's in your area? If so, what are some of the indications for using hind milk? What instructions would you give the mother to collect the hindmilk?

If that question doesn't apply to you, I can ask the following question instead:

Share the Breastmilk Storage Guidelines/Protocol that is currently used in your NICU.

Thanks thanks thanks for any feedback!! (The closest NICU to me is 2 hours away so I can't really run out and ask someone :)

We only have the mom's pump hindmilk if the baby is having a lot of trouble gaining weight despite fortifiers and using 30 cal formula as a fortifier. It is a PITA for the moms. They have to pump for 10-15 minutes, stop, label that milk, start pumping again for the hindmilk.

I'd have to look up the storage...I can't remember it off the top of my head...usually 48 hurs max in the fridge. With fortifier, only 8.

I'm not sure of what the current practice is. Have you checked with LeLeche League?
