I need to vent a little....

Specialties NICU

Published

How many of you are required to go to MANDATORY inservices/competencies, whatever, on equipment and topics that have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on your life in the NICU??

I've had to go to "skills fairs" where I had to prove my competence w/posey restraints, side rails (on big beds), & helping someone get out of bed. Today I've doing computer based competencies on "evacusleds" and diabetes pt education, pain management (NOT in babies--talking about PCA's and such) and a bunch of other stuff that just plain DOES NOT APPLY to NICU!~!!! :banghead: :smackingf :trout:

I tell you! when I'm King, I'm gonna make all those Med-Surg nurses and esp the Inservice and supervisory types demonstrate competency in breast feeding, using a Medula pump, proper storage of breast milk, and any thing else pertinant only in NICU/MCH. PAY BACK!! :monkeydance:

Mandatory? That sounds a little bit ridiculous. I had to go to a 'mandatory' inservice about the lift team. I asked the lift team manager if he even knew where to find the NICU.... there was a long pause and shrug of his shoulders, "And why would I be going there?" he finally asked. "Because I am going to page you each and every time you make me do this inservice". The next year the NICU was exempted.

Well, I did the skills fair. I asked the guy checking us off on the evacusled thing why? And why we didn't have any of those apron/vest things to take the babies out. He said that after we evac'd the babies, we could come upstairs to help out. :smackingf Um, we need to take care of said babies. They are not in NICU for a vacation.

As far as the aprons--he said to talk to my NM. Sheesh. So, we developed a plan. We're on the ground floor. We'll just break out the biggest window, one nurse will get out and we'll just hand the kids out!

Anyway, the other stuff on the skills fair wasn't too bad. We did less stuff than the floor RNs and way less than the ER.

We still have to do a skills fair for our own stuff!!

I assume that he will be babysitting your fragile newborns while you do the heavy lifiting. Sheesh!

We just had our hospital-wide skills day and postpartum was exempt from about half of the items. I was pleasantly surprised that someone had made a sensible decision.
