Help me! I really want to be a neonatal nurse. I'm a sophomore in high school and i'm not doing too well with Algebra 2? What kind of math do I need? Please don't tell me i need to know quadratics and rationals and all that fun stuff. :o

Look at what the colleges in your area require you to have to get into them and what they want for you to get into a nursing program.

But will i use it once i get into the field?

What is the toughest math i will have to do? please don't tell me to look into what colleges want! I really really appreciate your help, but i need to know what it's really like.

Like the previous reply said, it all depends on what college you attend. Many programs and many different math requirements, there isn't a set requirement for all schools. I know that many programs I have looked into have required algebra or algebra & stats. Of course all the classes you take in college won't be used on a daily basis but unfortunately most places you have to take a lot of extra classes besides just the core nursing classes.

Fortunately, the any time algebra is needed in nursing is figuring out drug concentrations. Yes you will need some knowledge of algebra, such as cross multiplication, solving 2x=y, x/4=y, etc. Mostly ratio and proportion. Most of the emergency drugs and drip rates are calculated beforehand with simple formulas already written out. But, most importantly, DO NOT PANIC NOW. You obviously have the desire, and a computer. As a homeschool mother of 2 teenage boys (15 and 16 y/o), who are taking algebra, I can tell you it is not a lost cause. There are all sorts of math helps on the internet. Go http://www.sosmath.com, http://www.boxermath.com (free 2 week trial), or just put algebra into your search engine. We are struggling through just fine. It has been >20 years since I took algebra, and I am re-learning it. Don't worry! Just stay focused on your goal. Decide on what you want to do, the obstacles will clear with your persistance!

Good Luck!
