Chances of getting into NICU after working at private office?

Specialties NICU

has anyone experienced landing a NICU job after being a nurse at a private office? what are the chances and how can I increase my chances? It's difficult to get a hospital job right now as a new grad (well old new grad for me since I graduated last May).I grabbed an offer at a private office b/c I didn't want to wait any longer due to finances. I regret not starting out w/ no hospital experience. I am interested in joining NAAN just to keep myself up to date. Any input is appreciated! Thanks

I think you are probably better off for the experience, rather than waiting and not gaining any experience at all. I went to an open house and spoke to a nurse recruiter who indicated that Peds office/Peds long term care would be looked at positively for a NICU position. Don't be discouraged. I've found the current job market is tight. Many hospitals in my area have had hiring freezes on for months. Good luck.

i work at an infertility private office. i'm still actively searching for a hospital job.

Any experience working as a nurse is a benefit. Our ICN trains all new hires, regardless of what they have done previously--for 12 weeks with a preceptor. As long as you could get hired, I think you would have a good shot since you've already mastered assessments, giving injections, dealing with crying babies, etc!

Agree that any experience as a nurse is beneficial. At least it shows that you're not just staying at home doing nothing. I think the fact that you're doing women's health is great b/c it is related to babies. Try joining NANN and other associations. Perhaps volunteer at hospital as a cuddler while you are still working your job. Start making connections. Just don't give up if NICU is what you want to do! :nurse:
